Won't save file after some time; opens 1000's of files

I am using WordPerfect2000 on Mandrake 7.0 and after anywhere from 1/2
hour to hours, Wordperfect locks up after attempting a file save. When
this happens I use "lsof" to see what files are open by either wine or
by wordperfect. I always find that Wordperfect and wine combined have
nearly 13000 open files, most of which are the same file. Before
starting word perfect, the total number of files open by all other apps
on the system is about 800.

Here is a sample of the open files by wine/wordperfect (use root to see
them all):

During use, the number of open files gradually increases from about 250
to ~13000. At the high end, Wordperfect stops saves and tends to appear
locked up. I think it might be blocked by the kernel after reaching some
maximum number of open file limit.

What is strange, is the file "/files/corel/shared/Writing
Tools/9.0/wt9uien.dll" tends to be open about 12000 times.

I noticed turning off "check spelling while you type" sometimes
stabilzes the number of open files. I am still evaulating this.

Does anyone know more about this issue?
