Greetings in Christ our Savior.

I am a newbie to the Linux world. We have Redhat 7.0 and the download
version of WordPerfect 8 installed on one machine, and are evaluating
this whole Linux situation before we put it on more machines and go
further with Linux.

I have looked at all of the posts on this newsgroup, the WordPerfect 8
newsgroup, and some of the other Corel linux newsgroups. From reading
all these posts, I have some questions that I would greatly appreciate
any knowledge or experience you could share with us.

From what I understand, WP8 for Linux does not handle TrueType fonts,
but WP9 for Linux does. Is that correct?

If WP9 handles TrueType fonts, how good of a job does it do? We have
nearly twenty years worth of books that we have published that are all
in WordPerfect documents
-- all the way back to version 4, I think. We use many different fonts,
and this is critical for us if we are to move from Windows to Linux. So
again, how well do the TrueType fonts display and print?

Along those same lines: If TrueType fonts do not work well in WP9, is
there a way to do font-mapping in WP9 or Linux itself to automatically
change the fonts from an existing font to a different font?

Does kerning work well in WP9 Linux?

We have tens of thousands of footnotes and endnotes in these documents.
Has anyone experienced any problems with footnotes/endnotes in WP9 for
Linux?

Overall, how do documents that were written and stored come across in
the Linux environment? Are there any translation problems to be found
in going back and forth between Linux and Windows environments? We
would probably be saving the documents in a vfat partition. Does that
matter?

I read on this and on the WP8 newsgroup (mostly on the WP8) that some
people having problems with graphics in WP for Linux. How
serious/frequent are these problems with the retail version of WP9?

We need very nice typesetting (considering we don't import them into
something like Quark and really go all out with the typesetting), and
like I say, these are for quality books that we publish, so print
quality is a very important concern for us. Further, since some of us
work on these computers all day -- and you can't very well tweak the
page layout if your display doesn't match the printer -- display quality
is somewhat of a concern for us. We would appreciate any feedback any
of you can give us about your experiences with these concerns.

Does anyone know Corel's return policy should we find that WP9 for Linux
won't work acceptably for our needs?

When is it likely that Corel will come out with a newer version of
WordPerfect for Linux?

We would like to get away from Microsoft products as much as possible,
we would like a more stable operating system, and would like better
internet performance. We're willing to put forth a fairly substantial
effort towards this end. With that in mind: overall, is it wise to move
from Windows98 to Linux at this time, or would we be better off waiting
a while longer?

We are willing to purchase Corel WordPerfect Office for Linux, but
before we buy it, we would very much appreciate hearing from some of you
as to your experiences with it.

We will greatly appreciate any advice or experience you would share with
us about these questions and concerns.

In Christ,

Br. Nicholas

Br Nicolas:
1) It's correct WPLINUX 8 doesn't handle true type at all but version 9 does

2) For the true type fonts under WPLINUX 9, I'll defer to the experts but
from what I've read, true type looks acceptable on the screen and prints
out rather accurately
3) the file format in WPLINUX 9 is the same one used by WPDOS 6,x so you can
easily move your files from WPDOS 6,x-WPLINUX 9 (and that included WPWIN
6,x/7/8/9 as well as WPLINUX 8) If you go to Word, I'd suggest keeping your
files in WPDOS 5,1 or even RTF
4) Can't say anything about kerning but I'll defer again to the experts
5) Corel's return policy is quite liberal. If after 30 days you're
disatisfied, you return it to the store where you bought from and it'll give
you a refund. If you'd feel more comfortable, you can buy directly from
Corel.
6) As for font mapping. I think you can do it in LINUX but it requires a
modification in the Xconfiguration file. Again, I'll let the LINUX experts
explain this in more detail

Dear Xavier,

Greetings in Christ our Saviour.

Thank you very much for these links. I had to take a break from linux for a
while, and didn't get to look at this group again until a couple of days
ago.

We purchased WPO2K, and have tried to use it without much sucess. I just
posted another thread to this group relating to the problems I've been
having.

Just wanted to say thanks for the links!

In Christ,

Br. Nicholas
