I have an Athalon 700, with 512MB of RAM, and when using WP02K, and any
of the programs file manager dialogs, it is extremely slow. If I use
the scroll buttons, the screen keeps refreshing, and trying to find a
file in a directory is a pain. I have searched Corel's site for this
issue, and this newsgroup, and I'm wondering if I'm the only one having
this problem.

Running RH 6.2 on 2.2.16

Thanks for any information, or a fix for this if possible.

Bruce:

Have you loaded Corel PhotoPaint 9 for Linux? It updates (at least some
portions of) the wine used by WPO2K and seems to improve the file
dialogs mightily. (I agree though, they were a real pain.)

Your window manager focus behavior can also have some influence.

Wow, thanks for the quick response! I have been looking into buying the
Corel Draw graphics suite, so that might fix the problem. I'm wonderning,
though if Corel plans on releasing this updated wine version to current WPO2K
customers.

I have also noticed that on the dialog boxes, that when I try and select a
different "Save as" file format, that when scrolling down the list,
sometimes, it jumps back to the top of the list. It sounds like the Window
Manager behavior could be the cause of this, since mine it set to "select"
the window automatically when the pointer is over it. Maybe the new wine
"disables" the Window Manager focus in the file dialogs?

Regardless, I'll probably be purchasing the Corel Draw Suite, which sounds
like might fix my speed problems.

Thanks again for your quick response!

Bruce

FWIW: Using KDE for a WM.

I haven't seen any improvement in that format scrolling aspect of things
(I have the same wretched behavior that you find), and I haven't been
able to change it with alterations of the focus behavior - but I might
not have hit the right combination. :-(

PP9 is available as a free download.

I'll have to look into that one!

Thanks again,

Hello Bruce,

Yes, I'm having the same problem. Recently, I purchased Corel's WPOY2K, and
I'm trying to determine whether it's worth keeping before the retailers
grace period expires.

I'm running WPO on an HP Pavilion 8280 running Red Hat 7.0. It might be
worth mentioning that I use Xig's DexTop (CDE) window manager. What I've
noticed is that when I open the file dialog, everything works fine as long
as I don't expect it to list any files in the current directory. Because
this is my first experience with WordPerfect, I have no WP files on my
system. Unfortunately, I make the mistake of requesting a list of all files
in the current directory. This can take several minutes, and even then I'm
not guaranteed any results. The other day I decided to take a shower while
it was working on this problem, but when I returned, I had to use the kill
command to terminate WPO.

Corel undertook quite a task when they decided to run WPO on top of WINE.
Wow! I don't recall any references to this "minor" point in any of the
documentation I read; either before or after the purchase. If I'd had this
little bit of information in advance, at the very least, I would have done
more research before making a commitment. The demo that I downloaded didn't
have this handicap. Neither did it accurately reflect the way that the
commercial version would behave. Consequently, after installing the product
(it took several hours), I was either pleasantly surprised, or deeply
chagrined.

I have read some of the responses to your message, but I'm not encouraged.
I will try changing the way the window manager changes the focus, but I
noticed that this solution failed for at least one reader. I don't think I
should have to purchase another product to get WPOY2K to work. Neither do I
want the free download. As it was, WPO took up almost all of the space I
had left on the drive, so I'm not even sure I have room for anything else.
What I'm hoping is that Corel will find an acceptable solution to this
problem, so that I can finally feel good about the purchase I've made.

Okay, Okay! I relented and downloaded the PhotoPaint product. I was after the
updated version of WINE. The RPM file was 92 megabytes big, but it took less
than ten minutes to download. I extracted the archive, and used gnorpm to
select and install WINE and fonttastic. I must admit that the problem with the
Open File dialog has improved, but there's still quite a ways to go. If WINE
proves to be the culprit, more often than not, Corel would do well to
concentrate on making it ready for prime time.

I do have another question, however. Why is it that WordPerfect correctly
identifies fonts in converted documents that I import, that don't exist in its
font list? I have yet to find common typefaces like Helvetica, Arial and Times
New Roman, and I don't know what the equivalent typefaces are.

Thanks

Edgar

Yet another update...

I guess I spoke too soon..., the problem persists. What I can't understand is
why the Open File dialog doesn't seem to have any problems displaying folders?
It's only when it has too list the content of a folder, that it seems to have
trouble. I downloaded and installed updated versions of WINE and WINE
libraries (see previous message). I did notice a message on my console that
said "creating font metrics, this might take awhile." There are a variety of
other messages showing up on the console -- I guess wine is running in debug
mode -- but I won't list all of them here. I feel like a beta tester.
