I am still having problems with WPO2K, and Redhat in general. I have not
yet been able to download Corel PhotoPaint9 to update WINE. It turns out
that the version of PhotoPaint that I had downloaded a couple of months ago
was for Debian. I tried to download the rpm version last night, but it
didn't make it. []:-( I will reattempt later today, unless someone here
can
tell me how I can use the Debian version on Redhat. ? Is that possible?
It seems to me that it should be possible.
Anyway, I had WPO2K all installed fine, and was typing away on a letter last
night using WP9 for Linux. I was signed in as a user, and I had saved the
document, and had saved it many times without any problems. However, I
when I went to save it for about the fifteenth or twentieth time, it gave me
an error message saying that I do not have permission to perform this
operation, and then WP9 aborted. Of course I lost my unsaved changes.
Linux itself seemed to be unaffected.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Is this something that the updated WINE in PhotoPaint9 will correct?
I saw one person post that the WINE for PhotoPaint is not 100% compatible
with WPO2K. I trust Alan Shutko's judgement in recommending this, since he
has helped so many people on this list and sure seems to know what he is
talking about. :) Still, just curious if anyone has any more info to share
about this.
The file that I was saving periodically in WP9 last night before it bombed
was located on my vfat drive. I think in previous installs, I have had this
problem even with files that were saved in my /home directory.
None-the-less, would you mind please looking at my /etc/fstab file and tell
me
if this is set up wrong and is part or all of my problem here?
LABEL=/ / ext2 defaults 1 1
LABEL=/boot /boot ext2 defaults 1 2

I also tend to have general problems with Linux freezing on me. Last night
as I was attempting to download PhotoPaint9, I had the stupid -- and yes, I
know this was stupid -- notion to change my screensaver in Gnome. I was
scrolling through them to pick one that was not overly obnoxious, when it
hit one it didn't like and locked up my system. CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE had no
effect. It appeared to have also killed my ftp download, as my hub no
longer had it's usual pleasant activity.
When this happens, is there anything else a person can do other than turning
off the machine -- which I know is not good for UNIX systems?
I also remember having similar behavior with Netscape 4.75, which shipped
with RH7. Is Netscape6 any better? What could be causing these lockup
problems?
Is this normal behaviour that I just have to accept as being a part of
workin in Linux? I would tend to think not, since it is supposed to be such
a stable operating system. I had to help administer an IBM RS2000 unix
server for a couple of years, and it did not crash once on us. Actually, it
didn't crash once that I can remember the entire six years I was there!
Is KDE better/more stable than GNOME?
If I understand correctly, they are both using the same X windows system,
and it's X and the rest of Linux that really determines the stability of the
system. Is that right? Still, I would think that KDE or GNOME could add
instability to this. ?
When configuring RH7 to run fonttastic, you have to put in the line:
FontPath "tcp/127.0.0.1:7102"
in the /etc/X11/Xf86Conf4 file.
It works in the /etc/X11/Xf86Conf also.
Which is the better file to put this in?
Is is possible that these problems could be related to my ATI RAGE 128 PRO
or my off-brand (DigiView HR-75) monitor? Corel OS won't load with this
video card, and Redhat 6.2 won't install in graphical mode, or let me
configure the X system with a text mode install. Is it concievable that
this could be part of my problem?
I am using the version of X that shipped with RH7. I don't think it's more
than three or four months old. Should I look to see if there is a later
version of X out there somewhere?
If so, is this going to be another nightmare to deal with?
I have a Diamond Viper video card that we're not using. Should I swap out
my video card and try RH 7.0 with it -- or RH 6.2 with it?
I only have a few more days before I have to either return WPO2K for a
refund, or keep it and possibly never get any decent use out of it.
Any advice or recommendations will be appreciated.
I know there are a lot of questions here, but everyone here really wants to
move to Linux, and I've been having nothing but problems with it. I've been
using computers since 1988. I was designing and developing software,
integrating databases that weren't meant to talk to each other long before
the days when people decided to make database connectivity reasonable,
administering DEC Vax systems, and all sorts of other computer stuff for
most of that time. One would think that I could get a simple Linux box to
run....... []:-o
Maybe our Saviour just wants to humble me. ?
Again, all of us here will greatly appreciate any help you can give us.

Well, you _can_, with judicious use of Alien, but depending on the
version you have installed, it may not be worth the effort. I'd just
download the new packages, personally.

Known bug... seems to be caused by having the Spell-as-you-go feature
turned on. Turning that off (or restarting WPO2k frequently) seems to
make it go away.
> Is this something that the updated WINE in PhotoPaint9 will correct?
I don't know... I don't think we've had any firm reports on that.

Gosh, I have you fooled!
Seriously, while the WINE specifically used by Photopaint may or may
not work with WPO2k, the Photopaint download contains updated packages
for wine-wpo2000. You'll have two WINEs on your system, one for
Photopaint, one for WPO2k.
> I also tend to have general problems with Linux freezing on me.
Since it's locking the system up hard, and X isn't responding, I would
kind of guess it's a bug in X or the kernel, leaning more toward X.
You should probably check to see that you have all the RH7 errata
installed, since early RHL7 had problems. Also, posting details of
the X version you're using, and what video card you have might help,
but no guarantees.
> When configuring RH7 to run fonttastic, you have to put in the line:

Actually, I don't do that. The wordperfect startup script should work
(though if you're using X 4.0 or higher, you need to edit the script
to remove "/all" from the xset commands).
If you want to do it in XF86Config, you need to put it in
/etc/X11/Xf86Config if you are using X 3.3.6, and in
/etc/X11/Xf86Config-4 if you're using X 4.0.1.
> Is is possible that these problems could be related to my ATI RAGE 128 PRO
> or my off-brand (DigiView HR-75) monitor?
Maybe. I haven't followed the R128 Pro development, but there's been
a lot of work since X 4.0.1 (shipped in RH). If you're using X 4.0.1
and seeing problems, you may want to upgrade to 4.0.2. If you're
using X 3.3.6, try using X 4.0.1 (since it's included in RH7 and you
won't need to download it).
For help with X problems, you'll get much better help from the XF86
newbie list (see http://www.xfree86.org/mailman/listinfo/newbie).
Many of the driver developers for the ATI cards read the list, and
they are very helpful.
> I have a Diamond Viper video card that we're not using. Should I swap out
> my video card and try RH 7.0 with it -- or RH 6.2 with it?
Maybe... I've never had a Diamond card, so I don't know anything about
them.

Alan Shutko <a...@acm.org> - In a variety of flavors!
This will be a memorable month -- no matter how hard you try to forget it.
Thank you again, Alan. Here is more info:
I have XFree86 4.0.1-1
Here is the appropriate section of my /etc/X11/Xf86Conf4 file:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "CustomConfiguration"
VendorName "Unknown"
ModelName "Unknown"
HorizSync 30-70
VertRefresh 50-120
EndSection
Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI|Rage 128 PF"
Driver "r128"
BoardName "Unknown"
EndSection
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "ATI|Rage 128 PF"
Monitor "CustomConfiguration"
DefaultDepth 24
Subsection "Display"
Depth 32
Modes "800x600"
EndSubSection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "800x600"
EndSubSection
EndSection
Again, this is for an ATI Rage 128 Pro and a DigiView HR-75 monitor.
I have printed off the instructions for upgrading XFree86, and will probably
upgrade that this afternoon or this evening, as time permits. I will also
read through their newbie list.
Now, for another BUG question. I don't know if this is present when using
WordPerfect as a regular user, but it does when logged in as root. *I know,
we're not supposed to use WP9 as root. I just didn't want to take the time
to log out for a two minute task.* []:-)
Anyway, I have found that in WP9 I can post text into the document and it
will be there -- I can see the scroll bar adjust for it, and the underlines
for misspelled words -- but I can't see the text. Also, if you use the
"View - Zoom" command, it will sometimes turn the entire document to this.
You can save the text, and open it in WP9 for Windows just fine. I'm not
sure if restarting WP9 Linux fixes this.
Is this a known bug, too? And is there a solution to this?
Are there any other pesky bugs out there, or maybe a list of them posted
somewhere, that I might like to know about beforehand?
Thanks again.

Upgrading X can be a royal pain to fix if something goes wrong. (Even
something like not realizing you need to save /etc/X11 can ruin a
morning.) I'd urge you to post a message to newbie before upgrading,
to see if it will help.
> Anyway, I have found that in WP9 I can post text into the document and it

Weird... I haven't seen problems like that since I saw a confusion
between Truetype fonts I'd installed, and ones which came with WPO2k.
I can't give a whole lot of guidance on this except to say it's
probably font related (duh). I'd check to a) make sure fontfs is
running, b) make sure it's in the fontpath (running ftfi will test
this admirably), c) check whether you have duplicately named fonts in
fontfs and your normal X font directories.
It's weird that it only happens on refreshes, though... hmmm if you
iconify WP and uniconify it, does it come back? Maybe this is also
related to your graphics driver.
> Are there any other pesky bugs out there, or maybe a list of them posted
> somewhere, that I might like to know about beforehand?
I don't know of a list, and I've done my best to forget them... lemme
see... trying to export as PDF will probably fail; don't start loading
a file and iconify WP before it's done because you'll lose your
menubar; yes, displaying filenames in the file dialogs is really
slow;... probably more, but I can't think of them offhand.
Most can be worked around or tolerated.

Ok. I'm stupid. what do you mean by "iconify" and "uniconify"?

Adding the socket is sufficient to fix the problem, but it is not necessary. Try
editing the script "wpolauncher" first.
If you have problems with the display of fonts in WPO 2K, then you need to add
the TCP socket:
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/local/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TT/"
FontPath "tcp/127.0.0.1:7102"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/"
It needs to be before after the other True Type fonts and before any other
scalable fonts.

XFree86 4.0.2 is on the Raw Hide FTP site:
ftp://rawhide.redhat.com/pub/rawhide/i386/RedHat/RPMS/
I would down load it if you are using the ATI 128 card, but is should not be
causing other problems

In general, this is the type of problem which I was having.
Putting the TCP socket in the fontpath section of XF86Config fixed it.

Sorry.
I would like to thank all of you for the advice and knowledge you have
shared with me. It has been very helpful. I think I have finally figured
out the cause of my screen lockups. When I first started this linux
endeavor, I checked the hardware compatibility lists for the hardware in
both of our computeres. I am almost certain that my Rage 128 Pro video card
was listed as compatible with RH7. Well, it no longer is... Redhat now
has it listed as incompatible.
It makes sense, too. As I reflect back on this, most of my screen lockups
have followed actions which require screen redraws, such as closing
applications, resizing windows, scrolling through documents, etc. Make
sense, or am I just being stupid again ? -- or grasping at straws ? -- or
simply hopeful ? []:-)
Anyway, thank you very much. Hopefully dealing with this video card problem
will solve at least most of my RH7 problems; and the help you have given me
has most certainly helped me with the WPO2K problems.

I don't understand. If they are two separate WINEs, how will installing
PhotoPaint9 help WPO2K ? Do they share some common files?

The photopaint download includes a set of packages specifically to
update for WPO2k. Those packages could be made available separately,
but they aren't.
It doesn't make sense, but that's the way it is.
