Also, while you're listening, wp frequently stops when I'm
loading a file -- there is no error message, wp just disappears
from the screen (and all processes are killed). Any advice
on that too?

Try loading it from an X-term -- the command is "wordperfect" -- and see
if you get any message.

I've noticed that if you close WP with a few documents open (without
closing them individually first), WP re-opens each one when
re-launched. This takes time, especialy if the open documents need to
be converted from Word. Check that out, and close all your documents
before shutting down WP.

1. having a data cd in the cd drive makes no difference to my problem
2. no messages are given while wp tries to start from console
3. it makes no difference whether or not docs were closed or not closed
in the previous session.
Now the update: the situation got worse: now wp tried to start but
*never* appeared -- at least not within 10 or 15 minutes. Note that
the wp and wine processes are present (you can see them in a
process manager or via ps in the console). Just once I noticed
a curious thing: the mouse pointer must have been in just the right
position and although no wp window was visible a tooltip caption
suddenly appeared! Maybe this is an X problem of some kind (I'm
using XFree 4).
I finally fixed this and the orginial problem with the good
old setupWPO2000 --force command. But this destroys
one's personal settings alas.
