Hi,

I can open CorelDraw 6 files directly from Windows Explorer by clicking on
them. Windows associates these files to the CorelDraw program through the
.cdr extension. Yet, when trying to open CorelDraw 9 files on the same
computer which share the same .cdr extension, I only get this error message:
"crlweb91.dll inked to missing export mfc42.dll:6569."

Why? Any solutions?

I'd suggest it is because the Corel9 cdr file is associated with version 6.
Look at the files in Windows Explorer with the file details view to see.

Even though my file association for 9 points to the correct place for opening it still wants to open
in version 7 and displays version 9 files as version 7 under details. It seems it only associates
the 3 letter extension - which of course is the same. I'm still using early windows 95.

In CorelDRAW9 go to Tools>Options>Global>Filters>Associate and enable
CDR association. Since this all your CDR files will be opened in Draw9.

I don't remember, but running CorelDRAW6 may restore CDR association
with version 6, so check it.

Dear Graeme, Serge

Thanks for your quick response.

I have installed and am using CorelDraw 9 (which I should have pointed out
originally) with
Windows 98 SE. I have also installed the service packs. All CorelDraw
version 6 and 9 .cdr files are listed as
"CorelDraw 9 Graphics" files in Windows Explorer as well as CorelDraw 9's
file association module. Both version 6 and 9 files should open with my
CorelDraw 9.

After checking the file associations again, everything appears alright.
However, I note that CorelDraw 9 cmx files do not open from Windows file
manager either.

Your suggestions have been much appreciated even though the problem remains.

Yours gratefully,

Ed

Additionally, go to your Corel/Draw9 folder and its subfolders, search
for all files with a .REG extension and double-click them to restore
proper registration of Draw9.
Did you install both Draw 6 and 9 into the same folder? Then you're
granted to have problems. De-install both and reinstall into separate
folders.
Are you ready for the hard way? then scan your Harddisk for different
versions of MFC42.DLL. This b**ch of a file spreads like a plague with
different applications. Move them all into isolated directories (e.g.
C:\Temp\1 ,C:\Temp\2, ...) and keep only either the latest or the
biggest in your Windows\System directory. BTW, mine is from May 5, 1999
(original Windows 98 SE), size 995.383 Byte in Properties.

Dear Ansgar,

Eureka! Your hint on looking for mfc42.dll files was right on. I found an
old version of an mfc42.dll in the folder in which CorelDraw 9 files were
stored. It was a fix sent by the techies at IBM for another problem I had
with IBM ViaVoice. It took me nine months to convince them the primary issue
was a faulty install from the program CD-Rom (the missing mfc42.dll), but
that's another story. Suffice it to say you and the Corel newsgroup came up
with the answer within a couple of days.

How the errant IBM-sent mfc42.dll got mixed into the CorelDraw files, I
don't know. But its deletion from the CorelDraw folder ended my problems
with opening CorelDraw 9 .cdr files. I haven't try to open .cmx files yet,
but I expect they will now open properly, too.

Thanks for your kind help,

Ed Laine

Picked up from "fortune", the UNIX/Linux collection of wisdom:

Glad you got it working.
