This is probably a simple question, but not to me, since I don't
know the answer. I've noticed that when I save a bitmap as a GIF
in PhotoPaint 8, then reopen it, the "document info" always
reports that it is 72 dots per inch -- even when I save the
original in 300 dots per inch, or whatever. I don't see any way
in the save box to adjust the dpi of a GIF during the save
operation.

So, is it possible to save GIFs at a higher resolution than 72
dpi? How do I get a GIF to show up as more than 72 dpi in the
"document info" box when I open it in PhotoPaint 8? I want to
save these suckers as GIFs from bitmaps at 300 dpi, then reopen
them and still have them at 300 dpi.

I'm not certain on this one either, but I don't think that GIF files contain
any scale info in their headers. Photo-paint therefore defaults to 72 dpi.
