Trace - 2 layers?

Using the Trace program, I end up with 2 layers, the bottom one being solid
black of the whole image. When I save the vector & open it in Draw, how do I
delete the black layer and keep the black outline around shapes? Applying a
black outline to the shapes does not give me satisfactory results.
