Confused about bitmaps

I have recently have problems where various draw files with multiple bitmap
objects get confused about where to show the various images. For example I
might have 2 groups of objects each with 3 bitmaps. After a cut and paste
operation a bitmap from group 1 might appear as expected in group 1 but also
in group 2 replacing the correct image. The offending image is usually
resized & distorted to the dimensions of the image it replaces.

The behaviour is infrequent & unpredictable but seems to happen during
cut/paste operations between files.
Has anyone else come across this?

FWIW no, but then is because I only cut and paste single bitmaps or drag and drop between to open
files.
I'm not very trusting of cut and paste with the clipboard due to the file sizes here and resources.
