It almost sounds as though you may have a couple of different things going on.
The first, obvious question is whether you've changed any settings on your
machine that could affect the display--specifically, video driver settings.
Does it behave the same way if you boot up in Safe mode?

When you select the ugly text with the Pick tool, how does the Status Bar
describe it? Does it indicate that it has an outline? If so, try removing the
outline.
