As I type in new text, the text turns into very small white boxes just as
soon as it is selected. Tried clicking the x in the lower left corner in
the color bar but nothing seems to help. Never had this problem before.
Any ideas out there?

The 'x' would give the characters no fill. Hopefully you tried
primary-clicking the black color swatch?
Does this occur regardless of what font you're using? What version of
Windows are you running, and how many fonts do you have installed?
