I am on a peer to peer network and neither my computer nor the one that
causes the problem have either the data or the net file on them.
This seems to be a Paradox problem and not a BDE problem because I can
access that data with a Delphi form. The Delphi form doesn't generate a BDE
error when accessing the data.

Nope. That isn't it.
All the machines here have been up since last week. I was working on some
opal stuff in paradox last night from my machine and it worked fine. This
morning when I came in, I couldn't access the BDE from my machine using
Paradox, but could with Delphi. The only difference since last night was
that this morning the secretary was accessing those tables from her machine.
As soon as she left Paradox, I was able to access from my machine.

The directory you are trying to start in or use as a private directory is in use
as a private directory by another user.

I also had similar problems - my solution - don't run peer to peer!
The other best solution is to download version 5 of the BDE from the
Inprise site - that fixed a whole pile of problems for me...

I don't know how this could be. Each computer has a Private directory
defined on a local drive that isn't even mapped or available to other
computers on the network.
Just to make sure that one of the computers didn't have the private
directory mapped to a network drive that could cause what you said, I opened
and checked all of them and they were where I thought they were.
I will remember that and check it if I see that problem again.
Thanks,

Haha, wish I could do that. Unfortunately that isn't an option in an office
with only three computers and three users. We can't really justify a
dedicated server with the current setup.

I didn't realize that there was a new version. I am running vs 4. I have
the new Delphi, but haven't loaded it yet. Is vs 5 of the BDE on there?
Kirk
This is set correctly. Believe me, I know what happens when it isn't. I
get corrupt data everywhere. Even if you use the BDE's browse command to
browse to the net directory, you still get errors. I have to have the
NetDir set like this:
\\linda\e\netfiles
It is set that way even in the "linda" machine. That way I have the same
physicial directory and the same name for the NetDir in every computer.
I have found if I map the E drive on the "linda" computer to a letter on the
other peers and set the netfile using the mapped letter, then I get horrible
data corruption. I decided is is because on the other computers the net
file would be L:\netfiles and on "linda" it would be E:\netfiles. That is
the same physical location, but not the same name.

I downloaded it from the Inprise site - look for a bde section. It's a
big update - the download file is 11Meg, but it was definately worth it.
in PDOX DOS you need the trailing \ after netfiles.

Use the SUBST l: e:\ to get the drive letter the same on the local machine
