OK, this time *I* need some help with something..

A customer's drive was getting ready to go.. zipped up all the files for
Outlook..
Windows/App.data/Identities/Bizzaro.directory.name/Microsoft/Outlook..
and the .wab files for the address book..

Did up the new machine.. set up Outlook, logged in and got more e-mail,
so I made a new inbox folder called "Hold" and moved all the messages
there..

Unzipped the old Outlook stuff.. it works fine.. but it doesn't "see"
the Hold folder, even tho it's still there.. what file, table, reg
setting, etc needs to be hacked to do this?

As for the address book file, it *doesn't* work.. managed to get the
default Address Book functional again, but it's empty, of course.. and I
can't seem to access the old stuff thru the Import/Export trail,
either..

Yeah, *now* I know I should have had the brains to use the Import/Export
trail to save the stuff in the first place <sigh>

Dunno for sure, but maybe you could reinstall Outlook Express, create
a new folder called Hold, then copy the old .dbx file over top of it?

No idea for the address book.

that's *exactly* what I wanted to do, but somehow couldn't manage to get
the Win98 CD to re-install Outlook..

I recently did a conversion from Win ME to Win 2000 Pro. I was able to
use the import feature for the address book. I had a folder "Saved e-
mails". I ended up creating the folder in Outlook Express then closing
Outlook Express deleting the created folder and moving the old folder to
the directory. Copying the file will didn't work because Win 2000 Pro
renamed the old folder "Saved email(1)". I found out that I had the
newly created folder in the wrong folder list in Outlook once I move the
folder to the right list the Outlook saw the saved email without any
problem.

what list?.. that's what I need to know.. the folders' mere existance under
Inbox doesn't make it show up in Outlook..

From what I recall, just create a new folder in Outlook. Once the new
folder is created in application data\blahblah\outlook, note the name of the
folder and rename your imported folder to the same name. That should work
(has for me in the past)

I don't follow. You have a working copy of Outlook Express and a new
empty folder called "Hold", and copying the file from the zip to this
named file location (under properties for the empty "Hold" folder)
doesn't work?

You should probably post to an Outlook group at this point, if you
haven't already. Sorry.

MS KB Aritcle Q257499 describes how to do what it sounds like you are
doing.

I think Lorrin nailed it.. make another new folder, rename the "hold"
folder to that!!

I think that's the trick!!

Steve,

You're probably "on-the-air" by now...but anyway... (I'm using the term
"mail-folder" to refer to the structure in OE - not to the data structures
on disk).

1. When you create a new "mail folder" in OE, the corresponding file isn't
created immediately. I think you must at least access that folder, or
perhaps drop something in there, to ensure the physical file is created.

2. The physical file will have the same name (as the name you assigned to
the "mail folder"), unless OE already finds a matching file. In that case it
appends a (1) or (2), etc, as needed, to the new file.

3. The relationship between the name you assigned, and the physical file, is
held in a "Folders" disk-FILE. The file also contains the full list of ALL
the mail folders recognised by OE.

4. If you have a proper OE file elsewhere, as in your case, then create a
new mail-folder in OE, ensure the physical file is created, note the
physical name assigned, and then copy your "real" file over the new physical
one.

5. If you delete a mail-folder in OE, especially that one with all that
?????? stuff you've been collecting <g>, I think the physical file is NOT
deleted. Oooopppppsssss !!!.

6. Now that you're an OE expert, you might take a look at all the files in
your OE directory, and check how many are there but no longer in the
"mail-folder" list in OE. You can use the above approach to re-activate
them. (Or delete the physical files).

Best regards,
- Mike
