Can someone explain how I can install this on RH9? I read the post
about installing under SuSe. Will it be similar? What are all the
packages that I will need?
Thanks very much,
Kevin
These are the packages:
fonts-115_1.0-4.deb
fonts-16_1.0-5.deb
fonts-69_1.0-4.deb
type1inst_0.6.1-6_i386.deb
wp-full_8.1_2_i386.deb
wp-manual_8.1-3_i386.deb (Not included in CLOS 1.2)
They are located in:
CLOS 1.0: /dists/corellinux-1.0/corel/binary-i386
CLOS 1.2: /dists/corellinux-1.2/corel/binary-i386/editors
and /dists/corellinux-1.2/corel/binary-i386/text
If your RH already has type1inst, don't use the Corel version.
You will need in all likelihood some additional support packages.
Review this news group or the SxS ("step by step") web site under
"utilities" for some procedures.
You probably will not be able to create RPM's using alien, so I suggest
using the TAR conversion and installation technique.

Thanks for the reply about the packages. OK, here's another question;
maybe it should be addressed to a different forum, though. I have Alien
installed on RH9 but don't have shlibs5 or typ1inst. The only shlibs5
package I saw was for SuSE. I'm assuming that won't work with RH9 (?).
I tried installing it just for the heck of it and got a list of all
sorts of failed dependencies. I then just tried converting the Corel
.deb packages to .tgz using Alien and this is the output I got:
Can't locate Alien/Package/Deb.pm in @INC (@INC contains:
/usr/lib/perl5/5.8.0/i386-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.0

/usr/bin/alien line 212.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/bin/alien line 212.
I have alien-7.24-3 which seems to be the most up-to-date version
available for RedHat. Does that give some better hints as to what I
need? (you'll have to excuse me; this is the first time I've ever tried
converting "alien" packages)
Thanks,
Kevin

Here is the old Corel WP8/Linux help file; this will identify the needed support libs.
#9210 -Installing WordPerfect® 8 Under New Linux Distributions
This document will provide information on installing WordPerfect®
8 under the latest RedHat Linux, Mandrake Linux and SuSE Linux. Foreknowledge
of RPM package installation is required.
RedHat
1. Download and install the ld.so-1.9.5-13.i386.rpm package.
2. Download and install the libc-5.3.12-31.i386.rpm package.
3. Run the ldconfig command to regenerate the library list.
4. Follow the standard installation instructions provided with WordPerfect®
8 .
Mandrake
1. Download and install the ld.so-1.9.11-4mdk.i586.rpm package, part of the Mandrake Cooker project.
2. Install the libc-5.3.12-35mdk.i586.rpm package from the installation CD.
3. Run the ldconfig command to regenerate the library list.
4. Follow the standard installation instructions provided with WordPerfect® 8 .
SuSE
1. Install the shlibs5 package from the SuSE FTP server for SuSE 7.2, the file off the installation disk #2 does not contain the necessary configurations. See http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/wordperfect72.html for more details. For SuSE Linux versions other than 7.2, the distributed shlibs5.rpm will function.
2. Run the ldconfig command to regenerate the library list. (Note: this step is not really necessary if you install shlibs with SuSE's YAST, which I recommend.)
3. Follow the standard installation instructions provided with WordPerfect® 8 .

Leon,
Couple of points:
1) ld.so is in cookers contrib directory, as opposed to cooker main.
2) libc5 isn't necessary for 8.1, which contain its own libraries. In
fact, the package can mess up macros if it's installed and listed
before /usr/lib/wp8/wpbin in /etc/ld.so.conf.

The old Corel help page, as it states, was for WP 8. It is old, no
longer displayed on Corel's website, and undoubtedly no longer valid for
some distributions.
WP8.1, as provided by CLOS 1 or 1.2, can be made to run using its own
static support libs on some distributions.
My original how-to on the SxS site describes this. The last, limited WP8
release, which is WP8.1 with a new installer and support libs, needs no
additional user intervention to install and run.

Oops, sorry, I didn't read closely enough.

You can unpack the DEB files with Alien, or, what I did was to install DPKG and
use KPackage to install it.
I installed:
dpkg-1.9.21_i386.nondebbin.tar.gz
Just [as root] unpack it in "/".
Remember to: "ldconfig" after you install directly with a tar binary.
and then used that to install:
dpkg_1.10.18_i386.deb
dselect_1.10.18_i386.deb
using KPackage.
This will complain about missing files and directories; just make empty files
and new directories and it will be happy. Then you can either use the command
line or KPackage to install the WP binaries.
You also need to install:
ld.so-1.9.5-13.i386.rpm
which you should be able to find at: rpmfind.net.
To run xwp, you will need to add:
/usr/lib/wp8/wpbin
to your: "/etc/ld.so.conf" file and execute [as root]: "ldconfig".

JRT: now that is slick: installing dpkg in Red Hat :-)
Another way of dealing with the Deb's if Alien is not up to it is to use
ar -x , as was suggested by another poster some time ago.
If you command ar -x xyz.deb it will produce two tar packages; one
called control and the other data. Since you will be handling several
deb's, you should immediately rename the data tar, e.g. data1.tgz.
When done extracting all of the needed packages, copy all of the data
tgz's (which you have renamend) into the top of the file system (/) and
install with tar xvzf

OK, I tried the ar -x version and things seemed to go well. For the
record, I did things a little differently: I renamed the data files
".tar.gz" and then did gzip -d to make tar files; then I untarred them
with tar -xvf.
Everything seemed to install properly. When I attempt to launch the
program with the command xwp, the Corel Linux logo comes up but I get an
error: /usr/lib/wp8/shlib10/wp.drs and it doesn't go any further.
Do I need to do something else or did I do something wrong?
Thanks,
Kevin

I checked my /usr/lib/wp8/shlib10 folder and I do not find a wp.drs file.

When WP8.1 and its fonts are installed from Debian packages the above
steps are accomplished automatically in package setup.
*Thanks and acknowledgment to Alan Shutko, a former C-Tech volunteer who
figured this out.

I followed your steps and it works fine now; WP8.1 is working under
RedHat 9.0 (as far as I can tell).
Thanks a million!

Please list the packages you needed (libc5, ld.so, type1inst), and where
to find them, in order to get WP8.1 to work with RH 9.0.

I used the type1inst from the Corel Linux installation disk (converted
to tar.gz using "ar -x" as outlined above):
CLOS 1.0: /dists/corellinux-1.0/corel/binary-i386 (my RedHat version
did not have the type1inst already in place)
The other two files, ld.so-1.9.5-13 & libc-5.3.12-31, were found on
rpmfind.net

Kevin
