Curly Quotes reverting to old format, etc.

When using WP12, every so often I found that all of a sudden the curly quotes no
longer worked. Also when other letters were typed they would produce letters
with French accents, etc. I have just recently switched to WPX4 and still have
this problem. the only thing I can do is save, close down WP and open it up
again. This works until it happens again.
