We have a 6 user system working on Paradox9 with Windows ME all pointing to
1 pc and the remainder logged on to G:.
The problem is I keep getting is
"Directory is controlled by another NET file" and then asks us if we want to
choose another directory.
Re booting, deleting the .NET & .LCK files works for so long then the same
will happen again.
Any help appreciated....

at least one of your machines and/or some other app that uses the tables (and
the BDE) is mapped to a different net file..

the remlok32 utility on my web site can show you what net file controls each
lock file, while pdox is open and running.. with everyone out, you can log them
in and out one at a time, to see if that'll show you the offending machine..

It that i computer is also being used as a work station it probably has more to
do with who logs in when. You really should not have a machine with data used as
a work station. It that is not the case then check out the faq on .net file
rules and make sure you are following all the info there. All your machines
should be pointing to the .net file with the exact same path (only the drive
letter can be different) and that included the machine that hosts the data
itself if you need to access the data from it for any reason (backup,
administration, not actual database usage as I mentioned above)

Thanks Steve for the reply..
Being fairly "Green" on this issue... should there only be one LCK and NET
file on the main PC? as there are a few in different directories.?

Address to FAQ newsgroup is in my tagline.

You should look for a message named: FAQ:PdoxWin:Net File Rules:2000.01.18
(or a laterdate)

there will be a pair of lock files in each directory that is being used, while
it is being used.. there should be only one net file.. that's your problem..

Yes there is only one .NET file and this is in the root directory of the
main PC
the LCK files are in the relevant folders on that PC..
This only seems to happen now and again for some reason.

the net file should *never* be in the root of a drive.. the root of a drive has
a 512 file limit, which can create an off-the-wall disaster at the wrong
moment.. and on XP, most users don't have permission to write to the root of a
drive..

So once I have deleted this file Paradox re-creates it in the root directory
.... how do I tell it to do differently ?

you go into the BDE Administrator (in Control Panel) and change it there.. if
you've got Paradox and the BDE installed on each machine, you must do this on
each machine..

Not to mention you pretty much never want to give users full rights to the root of
another computer either....

If you are fairly green to Pdox I suggest you also check out my Database Basics
paper which is on our Paradox resources page (link in my signature). It can help
you with best practices and with avoiding common pitfalls.
