My WP Office 12 is brand new. All my data files were created in WP8. With
the new version, when I try to close some documents without selecting
anything or making any changes, I get the "do you want to save changes"
window. This only happens with some documents - not all - and I've tried it
where I open the document & immediately close it and I still get this
message?

Donna,

Under Tools, Settings, Convert, do you have selected the option to
"Treat tabs like MSWord". This is a known cause of the 'modification'
of unmodified documents.

Donna:

Different printer (even: driver)?
Any change, however small, will provoke this message.
Because WP acts on data from the printer driver, any change there is
reflected in the document layout.

Roy - i made the change rec by Charles above, but I do have a new printer.
Why would it do it only on certain docs though and is there any way to
rectify? thanks.

If you have Saved the document in WP12 then it has been formatted for the
new printer, so a ReOpen does not cause further changes.
I suppose it is possible that some documents are affected by the change, and
others - perhaps not including certain features - are not.
It is not really something to rectify - it is a consequence of WP doing its
job (more thoroughly than most other apps).

You can use:
Tools | Settings | Convert: check
[] Don't use printer metrics...
[OK] out.

but then you lose the advantage of documents being prepared properly for the
current printer, and risk the odd surprise when seeing the hard copy.

If after doing Charles' suggestion, and after saving in WP12, you still
get the request to save, fonts are the likely culprit. If you don't have
the same font available that was used in the original document, WP will
substitute an available font that is similar [a common case is HP
supplied CG Times and Times New Roman]. However, the substitution is not
memorized in the document, so every time you open it, it appears to have
been modified.

Hi - Charles' original suggestion of deselecting the option under Convert
didn't work. It's also not a font issue - the fonts don't change, the same
font is available in WP12 (book antiqua regular), and the save message
doesn't come up for other docs in exactly the same font.

well charles' suggestion of unchecking "Treats Tabs like MSWord" in
Setting/Convert only worked for one of the documents in question and roy's
suggestion about "Don't Use Printer Metrics" in Settings/Convert doesn't
seem to be a viable option for correcting the problem. after 4 versions of
WP that did not do this, the "Save" message is driving me nuts when I have
only opened a document, which has already been saved in WP12 and which is
not a font compatibility issue. any other suggestions?

Donna,

Let's try to see where the problem arises. Is it in your default
template somewhere? Test by temporarily renaming your default template
file (probably WP12US.WPT) to WP12Back.wpt, and then launch WPWin12
again. What does this tell you?

Donna,

Chasing herrings: Do you have set under Bookmarks: "Set Quickmark on
save" and "Go to Quickmark on open"?

sorry for the delay. neither one is checked.
