I just ordered Office 12 from Corel (academic edition). I am currently
using Office 10, running under XP-Home Edition. When the new disk arrives,
should I uninstall my current version or install "on top" of it? What about
the Service Packs? Will I need to download SPs for a brand-new
out-of-the-box edition, and are there any problems with the SPs that should
cause me to wait awhile before using them?

Thanks,

Mary,

You can install WPOffice12, and also keep your version 10. A couple of
things to watch

-- Make sure that you do not install to the identical paths; install
folders WordPerfect10 and WordPerfect12 would be fine; folder
WordPerfect for both would cause problems.

-- You may be prompted to migrate your settings from WPWin10 to
WPWin12. Answer 'No' if you are going to keep WPWin10.

No. But a Repair of WPO12 might be a useful precaution.

Mary,

No problem uninstalling WPWin12. You will need to do a refresh/repair
of your WPWin12 just to make sure that all the registry entries
correctly refer to WPWin12.

To do the repair, close all WPO12 programs, and put the installation
CD#1 in its drive, and start it. Click on the WordPerfect 12 item to
initiate installation. You will soon be prompted for what action to
take. Choose repair.

I think that was meant to be "WPWin10" in the first sentence. Don't want
to confuddle those newbie lurkers!

Thanks, Charles and Roy. You have given me just the information I needed.
Incidentally, I am not familiar with "repair." Have I missed it all these
years, or is it new with WP11 (which I did not get) or 12? I have been
using WP going clear back to WP4.0 (DOS), and I don't recall seeing this
feature. However, it sounds easy to use and something that I obviously need
to do.

Mary,

In earlier versions of WPWin, the equivalent was to run PFReg.exe, which
re-wrote the Windows registry entries.

Hopefully you got ChrisD's correction to my post -- should have referred
to WPWin10 (not WPWin12) first time.

Oh, forgot. I think WP10 was the first version to use the Microsoft
Installer, which is the program that controls the repair function now.

Mary,

You had a question about service packs in your first post. The answer is
maybe. Check your version number of WP12, 12.0.0.??? The initial
release is 12.0.0.238. ServicePack1 is . . .288.

BTW, that education edition has a nice bonus, Paradox database.

Thanks, Charles. I'll keep separate folders, as you suggested. If I later
decide to uninstall WP10, will there be any problems with some WP10 and WP12
shared files being deleted?
