I am trying to save several wpd files as doc files but everytime I convert
with any file, I get a message that says that "file appears to be corrupted"
and changes the chosen extension back to wpd? when i tried one page of the
same file, it works ok.

Have you installed Service Pack 1 for WP12 yet?

That's the latest.

So, try just saving it as a wpd.... and then change the name to .doc and
see if Word will just open it.

yes I can rename the file with a doc extension & then open it. I can also
save the files in "Word 6.0/7.0 for Windows" and "Word for Windows 1.0." I
just can't SAVE AS "Word 97/2000/2003/2004 for Windows" but only for some
documents - in each case really large files. Is there someone I can do to
correct this glitch or is this a matter for the Corel techs and the next
patch?

I'm also still having a problem getting a "Do you want to save changes"
message after opening a file & immediately trying to close it, without
having even clicking the mouse in the document. I tried renaming the
template, unchecking "Treats Tabs like MS Word" and "Don't Use Printer
Metrics in Settings/Convert to no avail. After 4 versions of WP, I've never
had this problem & it is driving me crazy. Any suggestions?

If renaming it to "doc" works... then I don't see what the problem is.
If the converter in Word does the job...then why are you converting it
to other formats?

Donna,

How big is such a "very large file", after you have zipped it up?

And on the second issue, what happens if you right-click on blank space
on the menu bar? What is the top entry in the fly-out list?

well, something in the program is obviously not working if I'm getting a
message that the file is corrupted when I try to SAVE AS Word for Windows
2000, etc. when I can save to other extensions and I do get the message that
the "file may become unusable" when changing the extension. this is not
normal, is it? is your point that since i can save a wpd file to other
versions of Word that it is irrelevant?

270KB to 500KB on the file sizes unzipped (both created in WP8 & saved in
WP12). On the 2nd issue, "Wordperfect 12" is the checked top entry on the
fly-out list.

Donna,

If you wish, you may send me one of the files for testing, after zipping
it up. When zipped, you could e-mail that file to
"MySurname at tiscali dot co dot za"
where MySurname etc have the obvious meanings.

Yes. Windows always issues this warning.
(So I rename at a command prompt <s>.)

i'm sorry, i don't know how to zip it up - no zip drive on this computer if
this is what you mean.

They need to have the relevant conversion utility aboard.

Donna,

Zipping a file means passing it to a zip program (a classic being
WinZip) which processes the file to compress it as small as possible.

There is a zip program called 7-zip which is freeware. You can download
from http://www.7-zip.org/ either 7z313.exe or 7z410b.exe. The latter
is a beta version.

When installed, you can just right-click on a file and choose 'Add to
Archive'. Accept the defaults. Done!

Donna,

That name for the drive and the file spec is confusing!

If you have WinXP, there is a built in unzipper.

Because then you are relying on MS filters. Two problems with that. 1) MS
has traditionally been pretty bad at writing conversion filters when
compared to WP--formatting differences are more significant when using MS
filters for the same document, for instance. Document corruption also
occurs more frequently using MS filters. 2) You have to rely on the
recipient with Word having installed the WP filter, which is probably an old
filter in the first place, rather than ensuring the conversion yourself. I
have enough cleints that use Word and do not have filters installed to make
renaming to doc an unacceptable option.

Besides, Corel has touted and marketed upon the conversion supremacy of WP12
conversion, so it ought to work.
