Just installed WP12 and SP1 alongside existing installation of WP7. One
problem my work unit has had with WP7 that we were hoping to eliminate
in WP12 was an error that we get a lot when using documents with images
in them (a frequent error, since we use this method for our letterhead).

In WP7, any time an affected file was opened or saved (including period
backups), an error appears: "Can't create OLE prefix packet."

It doesn't affect all files with images (or even the same images), and
its behavior is inconsistent with regard to the actual saving--sometimes
it will save the file when clicking OK through the error, and sometimes
it will dump the user into a Save dialog without saving.

I just opened a file created in WP7 that delivered the error message
when opened, and WP12 gives the same error.

Anyone know what causes this error, and how to avoid it in the future?

Thanks.

=============
"WPWin Error - Can't Create OLE Prefix Packet"

Article ID: 4198
Revision Date: July 26, 1996

The information in this document applies to:
Corel(R) Office Professional 7

Opening a WPWin 6.1 template in WPWin 7.0 returns the error: "WPWin
Error - Can't Create OLE Prefix Packet." The error could also be
received opening a file and followed by an IPF in WPWIN7.EXE at
0137:004ddbfb

L

In this instance, the error was a result of document damage. After
deleting the graphics images in the template, the text was copied and
pasted to a new template screen. The the graphics images were then re
inserted and the new template was saved. The error did not reoccur
during subsequent use of the template.

In another instance, the document header appeared to be damaged and the
problem was resolved by replacing the damaged portion through an x insert.,

To do an x insert:

1. On blank document type a letter x,

2. Click on insert | file.

3. Highlight the damaged file, then click on insert.

4. Remove the x from the document and re-save the file.

Hi Cory,

I had similar problems with WP9 files that had OLE linked objects. When I
tried to open the WP9 files with WP12, the program (WP12) crashed.

This work-around may help you, as WP12 seems to handle OLE linked objects
better than previous versions:
open the file with WP 7 & remove the link and save the file.
open the file with WP12 and recreate the link--this may solve your
problem, but needs file by file correction.

Regards,

Richard J.

Rossiter's "x insert" method didn't work.

Richard, I'm not sure I'm following you, or whether your procedure is
applicable to my file. In this case, the document in question contains an
image that has been pasted into it from some other place (can't remember
where; it's a scanned letterhead image).

I don't think the image is linked; I think it is embedded (as evidenced by the
file's size).

Perhaps I'm missing something.

Thanks, guys. I looked for a Knowledge Base article on this about a year ago
and couldn't find anything. Either I missed this or it didn't exist yet.

I'll see if either of your suggestions work.

Found this KB article:

Details
When copying an image from another application into WordPerfect, the
message "OLE Object Could Not Be Created. This Is Usually Caused By A Problem
With The Windows Registration Database"

Answer
Click on Edit | Paste Special and select Windows Metafile.

When I copy the graphic to my clipboard from a corrupted file and try to paste
it into a blank document, "Windows Metafile" is not an option (WP7). However,
"Picture" is, which inserts the contents of the clipboard as a metafile
picture. Performing such a paste and then saving the file results in a file
which does NOT produce the offending error!

I'm up to my ears in macro code right now, but when I get a chance I'm going
to try this out on my "real" files.

It says the content is "Image". It gives a filename (which is the DOS
path and filename that existed when the image was first pasted into the
document) which no longer exists.

It seems to me that since the image displays and the external image file
no longer exists, that it must be an embedded image rather than an OLE
linked one. However, is it possible that the non-existence of the image
file is causing an error?

You see in Charles's reply the suggestion to delete all graphics and
recreate the document.
In your case, I suppose you would rather Cut the images and Paste them
into a new document.

In another KB article I see Repair suggested.
This was written for v11; I believe that v12 is the same:

Close down all Corel apps. Have your CD in the drive. If it auto-runs,
click Exit.
Disable any anti-virus software.
Locate the .msi file in the root directory of the CD.
Right-click on that file, and select Repair.
In v11 you cannot instruct Repair to ignore items - if they are not
selected, they are removed.
Break for coffee.
