I am unable to get Serv Pack 1 (WP12SP1E.msp) to run, getting a error
message box, Windows Installer "This action is only valid for products that
are currently installed". I am running WP Office 12 School edition on
Windows 2000 (with all MS updates).
Here is the history: I had downloaded the trial version of WP 12 after
deleting prev WP Office 2000 (WP9). I then installed Service Pack 1 to the
trial version. I then had to remove the trial version of WP12 because it
repeatedly
crashed when opening older WP files that have OLE links. I reloaded WP9,
removed
the links in various files (linked one WP file to another), and reloaded the
purchased version of WP12. Now Service Pack 1 won't run, presumably because
I already installed it. On installing WP12 for the second time, it seemed
to bypass the check for updates, unlike the earlier trial version. Version
running now is WP 12.0.0.288.
I tried re-downloading SP1. Also went to Windows Add/Remove Programs and on
WP Office 12, went to support then clicked on Repair. No improvement. I
have now downloaded Windows Installer Cleanup Utility
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=290301 . When this is run,
only the initial version of WP Office 12 shows, not the Service Pack.
Any ideas? Registry entries to change?
Kind regards,
Richard Johnson
Try uninstalling WP12 again... if it will let you. If not... then run
the MSI cleanup and then reinstall... then apply SP1.

As Sy points out, your 12.0.0.288 is the SP1 version. It won't accept
the attempt to update because it doesn't need to. That error message you
got is rather curious, however. It is not very helpful.
The original version was 12.0.0.228.
Thanks for your help and input. Yes somehow it seems that I have SP1
installed. I dug a little further, went to the release notes for SP1,
confirming not only the release number, but also that I could not recreate
the errors fixed by SP1.
Kind regards,
Richard J.
