Hello guys,

I have a small (printer) problem.

I use WordPerfect 5.1 and for printing my documents I had an Epson870
DotMatrix.
My beloved printer "died" and after a long search someone suggested me to
buy a HP LaserJet2300 that insured me it was compatible
with WordPerfect5.1.
I did the installation successfully in Win98. When I tried to print a
document from WordPerfect5.1 it printed "smilling faces", so in order to
solve the problem they told me I had to find the printers' drivers for
WordPerfect5.1. I found the "WP51HP4K.EXE" from this site:
www.columbia.edu. I run the exe and installed the .ALL files in WordPerfect.
When I run WordPerfect5.1 I use Shift-F7/Select Printer/Additional Printers
I scroll down the list and I found the name of the printer.
I press Enter to accept the printer filename.Immediately, a message appears
in which, I have no permission to do the change.

Pleaseeeeeeeee help me I can't workkkk.

Jessica :)

The problem appears to be that your .SET file (the parameter file that
contains information on your printers in addition to other configuration
information) is somewhere where you do not have the rights to change it.

Are you on a network? If so, are you running as the administrator?

Are you running Windows and if so, which version?

Hellooo Jack,

I run Win98 and the technician had installed them in 2 pcs' as a network, at
the time being the other pc it's not working.
so using the WP 5.1 I type this username 001 (002 was the other pc's WP5.1
username), my pc is the primary but i don't
know if i have administrator rights.
Is there any way to find it out and how?

Check with your technician and have him set the rights.

This program was bought in 1992, the company that did the installation no
longer exists.
So far I can't find someone that can solve me this problem, could you give
me a more exact solution.

Administrators do not exist under Win98.
(Security does not exist there <s>.)
So some other problem is preventing the action that Jack noted.
I cannot think what under Win98 that might be.

...but you didn't have Windows 98 in 1992. Who did the Win98 install and
did they do a network install or standalone?

Try temporarily renaming (or move to some storage directory) the file
wp{wp}.env (which sets the network environment), and see if that lets WP
treat itself as not networked. I think there's no good reason to install
WP's networking options in this era of large hard disks; every user can have
his or her own standalone installation and still print very happily. (But
I'll be glad to hear of counter-arguments!)

....the pc initially was in DOS with WP5.1, in 1994-1995 WIN95 was installed,
since then no problem had occured,
as i have already told you the company (that no longer exists), had
installed them in 2 pcs' as a network, the last 4-5
years the other pc is not working and no changes have been done .

Have you tried Edward's suggestion?

OK. Let's go back to basics.

Do Shift-F1, Location of Files. What directory is specified for the
Printer Files?

Do Shift-F7, Select Printer. Exactly what printer names appear there? If
your old now dearly departed Epson appears, can you select it and Delete
it?

I leave on a month's vacation tomorrow (Monday). Lemoto and others will
be happy to continue helping you.
