I am using WP LawOffice 2000 and after drafting a lengthy pleading I
went back through it and noticed the program had inserted SPg codes one
and two lines above the last line of the page leaving the page with
blank lines. I couldn't place my cursor on those blank lines however I
could force text to the bottom line by skipping a line further up on the
page.

I noticed that the SPg code would be inserted and the lines skipped if I
created two paragraphs from one by hitting enter.

Has this ever happened to anyone? Is there a way to keep this from
happening?

Thanks,
Stan

Stan,

The [SPg] code is the "soft page" code. This shows where the text is being
forced to the next page because the current page is full. Every page that
is not terminated with a Hard Page (Ctrl+Enter) will be terminated by a soft
page code of some sort. This soft page code could be associated with a hard
return or it could just be in the middle of a paragraph.

The point at which the soft page occurs is governed by the choice of paper
size, paper margins, font face and size, widow/orphan protection, block
protection, and others. In particular, if you change printer or change
version of Windows, pagination will change. This is much reduced by doing
Tools, Settings, Convert and selecting the option "Do not use printer
metrics" and clicking the Template button.

However, your description suggests that you have widow/orphan protection on
-- that is you are preventing paragraphs to be split across a page break in
such a way as to leave a single line at the bottom or top of a page. I
personally prefer that option to be set, as I think the single lines of text
should not be "widowed" or "orphaned" from paragraphs. But you can deselect
this option under Format, Keep text together, widow/orphan protect.

QUERY

I am using WP LawOffice 2000 and after drafting a lengthy pleading I
.... noticed the program had inserted SPg codes one and two lines above
the last line of the page leaving the page with blank lines.... Is there

a way to keep this from happening?

RESPONSE
There are a couple of things you might try first:

Conduct a search of this pleading and see if you can find a Widow/Orphan
[Wid/Orph] code, using Find & Replace by doing a Edit | Find &
Replace..., choosing "Wid/Orph" from the "Codes" dialog (under Match |
Codes...), enabling "Wrap at Beg./End of Document" (under the "Options"
menu) and clicking the "Find Next" button. If not, you should check for
this code in the "DocumentStyle" open style itself by opening the Styles
Editor by doing a File | Document | Current Document Style... (or you
may opt to do this from within the Reveal Codes window, by
double-clicking on the "DocumentStyle" style). If you find there is a
[Wid/Orph] code, remove it and see if this problem is then resolved.

If you are only having this problem with this one document -- in other
words, all of your other pleadings paginate just fine -- that it might
be beneficial to just open one of these other documents, select and
delete the text below the caption, and cut-and-paste the text below this
"bad" document to this "good" one, and, if things are as they should be,
then fix the caption, making any modifications needed to the footers
and/or headers, and after doing a "Save As" on the "bad" document and
cutting (or copying) the name of the file, close the "bad" document and
do a "Save As" on the "good" document upon pasting the filename you cut
(or copied) into the "File name" edit box.

Peace

Charles and Karl,

Thanks. That was it, widow/orphan protect was on.
