Thanks, John Namias
It's my understanding that it will be available in another 4-6 weeks. It
would be worth your while to look into Corel's Freedom Plan -- it's a
new licensing program for 100+ users and includes updates for a year
from purchase in addition to some other nifty things.

My understanding of this "licensing" is that you will only pay for the
licenses you use (got 40 folks, use 40 licenses)

"Robert,
I'm resending this message because we were having SMTP gateway
problems on the day it was originally sent and I'm unsure if you received
the original transmission. Since the message was originally sent, I've
read in WP magazine that WP 9 will be out this summer. Does this mean that
WP 9 Legal Edition will also be released this summer?
Thanks for your quick reply,
John
Robert,
Well, our executive committee met this AM and an important question
arose from the meeting.
As you know, we have been poised to purchase WP 8 Legal Edition since
last November. We have heard several times that WP 8 Legal would be
released in a "month or 6 weeks" and have been quietly enduring the GPF
problems and slowness of WP 6.1 while we wait. The question that was asked
of me this AM is this: If we purchase our 36 WP 8 Suite upgrades now, can
we get a credit in the amount of the cost of the upgrades toward the
purchase of WP 8 Legal Edition when it is finally released. This would
allow us to at least take a few steps forward in the long and tedious
process of upgrading our office suite. It would allow us to start the
conversion of the many in-house developed WP macros, convert our MS Excel
spreadsheets and MS Access databases to Quattro Pro and Paradox,
respectively, initiate training of our staff on the differences between WP
6.1 and WP 8, and iron out the inevitable wrinkles that occur with a
software upgrade.
I know you talked about the Freedom licensing plan in your reply. If
it were available in a 50-user option, I'm sure that it would be VERY
attractive. But, to be frank with you, the cost is simply to great.
Please email the response to our question as quickly as you can as we are
ready now.
Thank you for your attention.
Respectfully,

If you think M$ would answer a question like this more quickly or that a
"salesperson" would have the authority to cut this kind of deal, then
you need to be using "that other software" but don't come whining when
you don't have a reveal codes and you start to make a long document and
you can't keep up with the "verisioning" which keeps track of the
revisions and versions of a document -from within WP- not having to use
an expensive third-party (Soft Solutions???) software. Or you can't work
tables. It appears that you were already using M$ so why did you not
just switch to Word for documents too??? Most of those macros you have
may be "built-in" now (like envelopes??) so you probably don't so much
"conversion" and as for the documents, you really don't need any, you
just open them in the new version (well, you may have to tweek a bit if
you don't have the same printers and fonts, but nothing major)
Had you thought about picking up the -telephone- (yes, there is still
that antique thing sitting on your desk that you talk to your mom on)and
asking this question of a live body in authority?? Imagine an associate
of your firm (the newest one) called on to make a similar decision that
the senior partner did not give him the authority to do (sometimes it's
as simple as "can we change the date of this deposition?")
Are you aware that WP Magazine is -not- owned by Corel; it is a separate
entity and the same as reading PC World. Did you not see the article in
Law Tech, said the same thing??? Did you not the full-page ad in the ABA
Journal for the new Legal Suite 8 that will have Dragon Dictate as part
of it??? Well, when I called that 800- number they said Corel had pushed
the release date to the last of April not the last of March. Meaning
they don't have any in stock, but what do they know, they are only
distributors.
Have you done an analysis of why you get GPF's and why you have
crashes??? Is it because you haven't upgraded your video drivers???
Couldn't be something simple like that, could it??? Couldn't be some TSR
conflict??? Couldn't be memory could it??? Couldn't be a "network"
problem???
What about us poor schmucks who purchased Suite 7, then found out Legal
Suite 7 was coming out, then found out that it was a 16-bit program
rather than the 32 bit program that Suite 7 already was? I have been
using WP since 4.2 for DOS and have made -every- upgrade, but even I am
dumb enough to know that nobody is going to -give- me anything. The
beset I ever got was "free for $9.95" shipping and handling when I
upgraded from WPDOS5.1 to WP6.0 and when I switched to the windows
versions I have had to purchase everyone of them.
Geez, sorry for the band width, but it seems as if you are another law
office which is sold on price and M$ and tight-fisted senior partners
rather than efficiency. The short story is that a law firm here in
Dallas up-graded from WPDOS 5.1 to WPWin6.0a. They hired temps for six
weeks to handle the work while their regular employees learned and made
macros and went to school; do you know they didn't loose a single
employee for over a year and that one was because her husband
transferred. They didn't have to fire anyone and nobody quit;
productivity stayed -exactly- the same. But the law firm spent money on
making their people comfortable rather than looking at how much money
they are spending on inanimate objects.
I've been working with and for lawyers for 30 years and they don't
change. Wonder why they are so many lawyer jokes?

First, I do not feel that my post is "something that is so personal". It
is a valid concern that I felt others might have also. These forums are
frequently visited by people from Corel - after all, it's hosted by Corel.
The release date of WP8 Legal Edition has been pushed several times and I
just want to get reliable information directly from the source. I HAVE
made several calls to Corel over the last month, left voice mails, and have
NOT received a return call. Weather or not WP Magazine is owned by Corel
is not relevent...the information about WP 9 was published and I assume
came from a Corel source. I was only trying to get a confirmation of the
story and info on a possible WP Legal Edition 9. No, I did not see the Law
Tech article until mail was delivered later that day.
Yes, I have analyzed the GPFs and have resolved most of them. Some of them
occur because WP 6.1 wasn't designed to run on Win 95. Installing new
versions of a software package is an exciting part of my job. I like to
install a package, iron out the bugs, get the personnel trained, and get
on with the next item on my list of things to do. I do not like to
install the same software package month after month. I simply to get the
latest technology so that I don't wind up like those people you mentioned
that purchased WP 7.
My reference to Micro$oft was meant as a joke. I apologize if you didn't
find it amusing. I have used M$ Word in the past and MUCH prefer WP
Thank you for your time.

Please note - original message(s) snipped for brevity.

Yes, it has been; as well as the fact that they brought WP7 Legal out
just three months after Suite7 and did not do any advertising that you
could purchase "add-ons".
Some of the reason for the delays in the new Legal Edition is the fact
that this will be a 32-bit program and some of the "add-ons" are DOS
based programs so the integration of code is not seamleass.

I can't imagine anyone using any thing else in a law office <g> I'm
luckier than most in that I get to pick my product and pretend I'm the
MIS administrator here.
Again, a public apology for the rant that appeared to be a personal
attack.

Not a problem. I did not see your reply as a personal attack. It's just
that I've gotten very frustrated between being asked these questions by the
people here and not being acknowledged by Corel. I was hoping that I could
reach a representative through this forum. I'll try to be less "ventful"
in the future.

Anyway, I will certainly keep posting suggestions, problems, and other
thoughts to this forum. After all, it seems the best place to keep in
touch with computer techies and pseudo-techies that work in a law office
environment.

Here's the continuing saga......
I got hold of the name of someone in licensing Wednesday and called them.
Around 7:30 on Thursday morning (CST) I received a call from someone else
(the licensing person passed me on). Since I was not at work yet, all I
got was the voice mail. I returned the call at about 9:30 AM CST and,
since that person was not at their desk, left a voicemail with all
pertinant info. I thought that I would wait until Monday AM (no I won't be
working this weekend) before I pester them again. I plan to use the phone
so that I don't get everybody on this forum mad at me <:). I will post a
weekly summary-of-events.

1. Can we purchase licensing for WP8 Legal Edition now and use WP 8
Suite until Legal Edition is officially released?
or 2. If we purchase our upgrades to WP8 Suite now, can we be credited
this amount toward Legal Edition when it is released?
Someone talked about Corel's Freedom Plan. It makes no sense for us to
purchase 100 licenses for 40 people. Also, we don't want to install Legal
Edition 7 with it's 16-bit applications, only to install Legal Edition 8
with all of its updated 32-bit apps. This is our primary reason for
waiting.
Thanks for your time,
