Help...I am desperate!!!

A law office I am working for as a PC consultant is having continuing
troubles. Their Pentium 233 / 32MB RAM machines are brand new with Win95
installed at the assembly shop (NOW Micro, Inc., in the Minneapolis
area). The only common software on the three machines is Win95, Corel
Suite 7 and Bankruptcy 2000 from New Hope software.

Their machines lock up a few to several times per day. They could be in
WP7 typing a merge doc, or just moving the mouse to print or save. They
may have WP7 closed (although DAD and the WP Print manager are always
running in the background). It can lock up playing FreeCell, or moving
click on play for an audio CD, or just opening My Comuter. I can see no
pattern which "triggers" a lock up. When it locks up, the mouse pointer
disappears and no keys work (no CTRL-ALT-DEL or ALT-F4); there is no
error message. They must hit the hardware reset button or turn it off
and on again to get free of the lock up.

One of the three machines was returned to the shop and was comepletely
re-done: FDISK, format C:, and re-install Win95. After two days (of
admittedly less than normal use) the machine would not lock up. The tech
declared that there was no hardware problem. (This tech has been in the
business for 13 years, so he is no novice, although I suppose he could
be wrong.) So, yesterday, I completely re-did the other two machines:
(FDISK, format C:, re-install Win95 from 3 different CD's, re-install
the Bankruptcy 2000 software, and re-installed Corel 7 Suite. Everything
went well. The machines weren't used too much more after I left, so no
lock ups occurred in the last hour or so yesterday. Today, I received a
phone message that the two that are being used today are locking up
again.

I SIMPLY MUST KNOW IF THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH COREL SUITE 7 ON SOME
VERSIONS OF WIN 95, OR IF THERE IS A (POTENTIAL) CONFLICT WITH COREL
SUITE 7 AND THE BANKRUPTCY 2000 PROGRAM. HAS THIS HAPPENED TO ANYONE
ELSE OUT THERE? PLEASE HELP US!!!!!!!!

Thanks....Chuck Krejci

Are there any error messages? We need the details on the errors. What
are they doing when the errors occur. If they are playing FREECELL, I
can't see that this would have anything to do with WordPerfect.

Thanks for the reply...

No error messages. The system locks up hard...no mouse pointer, no keys
work...must reset with push button or turn off/on. It happens in and out
of WP7. Could it be a conflict between/among Win95/Corel 7/Bankruptcy
2000? ...even if those programs aren't running at the time of the
lockup? How about problems with software not liking certain hardware or
drivers (e.g., video cards / drivers)?

HELP!!!!!!!! Thanks....Chuck Krejci, maxa...@pioneerplanet.infi.net

You asked this question on the Suite7 NG and I answered you there that
it is a conflict with the Bankruptcy2000 program (which is possibly not
a true 32-bit program). It is also happens "out of WP7" then it must be
something bedies WP, don't you think?

I will repeat here what I directed you to in WP7 NG, so the Corel-tech
who reads this can "suggest" without asking any more questions:
It sounds as if it is "video" driver problems. Usually lock-ups with no
mouse movement or keyboard response is "driver" problems. Maybe you need
new mouse-s. Perhaps your set-up through a network is not correct. Or
the "switch to wordprocessing" through the Bankruptcy program is not
set-up correctly. You could also have problems with the "shadow cursor"
because I have discovered that if the "shadow bar" is not on the same
page as the cursor where you are typing, then you will get a lock up (as
the cursor thinks it is off the page).

Secondly, you obviously can't get to the "task" menu to see what is
running at the same time when you lock-up and what is "not responding",
but when you can look at the TSR's, check to see if any Norton is
running (Crash-Guard??) or virus checkers or anything else that might be
a problem (I discovered a problem with the Quick-Finder scheduler timed
back-up, so turned it off).

I would look at the Bankruptcy program first since this is not a part of
the WP7 suite, perhaps what you will have to do (since this is a "merge"
program anyway) is just make the merge and then exit that program while
you work in the WP program. Perhaps you need to contact the Bankruptcy
program company and ask them about "integration with WP and 32-bit
programs). Most of the companies like Pro-Docs, or even Abacus Law, are
written in "clarion", are not 32-bit program (really are basically DOS
programs) and don't integrate well with the 32-bit versions of Windows.

Turn down your video acellerator and also go to low resolution and low
colors [even 16] (you don't need 1024 or 32-bit color for word
processing anyway)
