assigning to report text object from form?

In older version of Paradox I used to be able to do something like:

r.myText = edit.value

where r is a report variable (report is open), myText is a text object in
the report, and edit is a field on the form.

Now I get an exception when I try this. What gives?

Also, is there a patch out for PX8? The product seems slow in places, buggy
in others. For example, when I right click on icons in the Project Viewer,
there is a very noticeable delay before I get the menu.

Also, I've gotten errors in the report designer when resizing columns of a
table.
