Hi,
Lately Photopaint 7 has been crashing very time I exit the program.
The GPF message is:

PHOTOPNT caused an invalid page fault in
module GEAR32PD.DLL at 014f:0502c2dc.

Does anyone have any idea why Photopaint crashes on exit, and/or
what might be wrong with GEAR32PD.DLL?

My system: GW 2000 p5-100xl, 32MB RAM, 6GB HD, Matrox Millenium II
video card (latest drivers, "Microsoft Certified"), WIN95, IE4.01
(active desktop OFF).

TIA,
Ron Niquette

Unload the Auto F/X plugin from your plugins list in Tools>Options.
Close PP, reboot, and reload the plugin.

Also, what revision of PP7 are you using? Go to Help/About for that
information.

Hi Debbie,
Thanks for taking the time to respond!!
Unfortunately, the unload/reboot/reload approach didn't work - as
soon as I reloaded Autofx, the problem returned. For now, I've left
Autofx unloaded and Photopaint runs fine.
I'm running version 7.373.

Thanks,
Ron Niquette

Drat!

You should contact Customer Service for the .467 update. While you're
waiting for that to arrive, download and install the .375 patch. And,
after you've received the .467 revision, download the .468 patch to be
completely up to date. Well, not completely ... there's always version
8. <BG>

Debbie,
Some things you should know about the .375 patch:

1. The patch is applied to CorelDraw7, not PhotoPaint7. As such, the
patch does nothing to fix the GPF in the AutoFX plugin module.

2. There is no version .375 upgrade patch available specifically for
PhotoPaint at the Corel site.

3. The patch which addresses at least one AutoFX problem is an upgrade
from version .662 to .664, not from version .467 to .468.

You might want to familiarize yourself with the available downloadable
patches for PhotoPaint, as well as descriptions of the problems they
address. The text below was copied from the PhotoPaint download
page.

"Downloadable files

Name: P7JPG.EXE
Title: Corel PHOTO-PAINT™ 7 Plus JPEG Filter Update
Released: 05-Sep-97
Size: 145 KB
This patch will add an additional sub-format option (Optional 4:4:4)
for JPG exports. This option allows you to retain more data (lower
compression ratio) than the standard option (4:2:2), therefore
giving better quality JPEG images.

Name: PP7664.EXE
Title: Corel PHOTO-PAINT™ 7 Plus Patch
Released: 20-Jun-97
Size: 605 KB
This patch updates Corel PHOTO-PAINT™ 7 Plus to build 664 from 662.
Major fixes include: This patch fixes the problem of certain text
images becoming corrupt when running Corel PHOTO-PAINT 7 on a MMX
system. Clipping to Mask or Path in EPS export caused problems with
Print Preview. Selecting the transparent background with a custom
Eyedropper selection could lead to instabilities.
Creating a text box with just a space could cause the
application to become unstable. Copying of grouped objects in multi
object mode could cause instabilities in some instances.
Auto FX plug-in - a floating mask of a specific size could cause
the application to become unstable. Effects - 2D - Puzzle - caused a
condition error in some instances.

Name: PP7NT4.EXE
Title: Corel PHOTO-PAINT™ 7 – Windows NT® 4.0 Preventative Fix
Released: 09-Apr-97
Size: 22 KB
This is a preventative patch for Windows NT® only. Download this patch
if system performance appears degraded after installation.

Name: CDRUPG.EXE
Title: Corel PHOTO-PAINT™ 7 Plus CDR Conversion Patch
Released: 04-Aug-97
Size: 609 KB
This patch will update CDRCONV.EXE. Cdrconv.exe is used to open CDR,
CDX, CMX, and CPX file formats. The update improves handling of CDR
files without presentation information.

I'm sorry if you misunderstood that that's what I was saying. I was
not. I was merely trying to point out a patch that is available in the
interim between now and when you receive the .467 patch, in case you
were having add'l problems with the suite and also to avoid some
problems you may not yet have encountered.

No, not specifically for PhotoPaint. Again, I apologize if that's how
you interpreted my message.

The .468 patch is applied to the suite version of PP7; the .664 patch
is for the standalone version of PP7. Although the descriptions are
different on Corel's website, they are essentially the same patch.

Thank you, but I am already familiar with the patches.

The problem was not that I misunderstood anything. We were talking
about PP7 and you replied that an upgrade patch was available. You
supplied no other information other than the version number of the
patch, so there was no way for me to know that you weren't talking
about PP7.

I suggest that people who can't read your mind don't necessarily
"misunderstand" you. They just can't read your mind.

Debbie,
I'm sorry. I shouldn't have written those last two messages.

Thanks, Ron. That makes me feel better, because I was about to ...
just kidding! <BG>

One of the hardest things about this form of communication is that it's
very easy to assume others will know exactly what you mean, when in
fact they may not. I find, however, that with a little patience and
some explanation when necessary, it usually works out. Thanks for
being willing to work through the misunderstandings/mind readings, and
I'll try to make my messages clearer.
