In a 110-page chapter, I have a big red "X" on one of the pages (right in
the middle of the chapter) and I'm sure it's because of text that was
formatted long ago (the kerning was changed).
Now, every time I try to go near that paragraph, Ventura closes (version
8.429). I can't go and change the kerning back to normal... This chapter has
been changed over the years and the option EXPORT TO SAVE wasn't on, so my
txt file isn't up to date. I really need to get the bug out ! All the other
pages after this red "X" in the same chapter are blank !
I'm sure my back-up versions are the same...
Please help !
Monica
First of all, you should get SP2 for Ventura to bring you up to Version
8.559. You can download it here:
To try to recover your text file: Click on the page border and select File,
Export Text and save as ANSI format. You can open it a text editor to edit
the kerning codes in the problem paragraph.

If you cannot do a regular save because it crashes, you should do a Save As
(make sure you make it a different filename). This sometimes removes minor
corruptions and reduces file bloat.
If you have WinXP you should install SP1 and then SP2. For some reason this
works.
In addition to this, you can also try Copy Editor view, which removes
all responsibility for placing the text from Ventura. In CE view you can
select whichever is the problem file to display it, then File Export
Text to save externally. You may even be able to edit the problem away
in CE view.
Also, try right-clicking the page border when you have the red X, and
click Format Error. It's rare that Ventura is helpful in offering a
solution, but you may get lucky.

If you haven't found a solution and it would be possible (no secrets, no
problems with customer), you can sent me the pub or give me a link per
email to download it.
I can't promise you anything, but I would try to found a solution.

Is the text file on the base page or in a frame? If it is on the base page
of the chapter, you can select another page (that is not corrupt) and select
it to export. If it is in a continued frame you may be able to select
another frame and export it.
I think you should try a quick rebuild of the pub to see if you can remove
some of the corruptions. Just open a New pub then, using Ventura Navigator
window, drag and drop the Stylesheet and Chapters, one at a time, over to
the new pub. Make sure to Save As (to a different filename) after every
couple of chapters. Leave the problem chapter for last. You may need to
rebuild the chapter if Ventura still crashes. Try copying the text file over
to the new pub and placing it in the base page frame. Then, as Abe said, you
could look at the text in Copy Editor View and remove the kerning from
there.
Note: The quick rebuild method does not copy over any TOC, Index and
conditions, so you will need to use Bob's PubPresets script. You can
download it here: http://www.draw.nu/venturafaq/scripts/pubpresets.zip
You can also send the file to me and I'll be happy to look at it.
I've just sent you per email a adress to download your file.
I hope. it works now.
I've just export and import the text, after this I've no problem with the
file.
I forgot about that one. Thanks for jogging my memory Abe. In fact, this one
got me thinking.
The red X means the text will not fit on the problem pages. There may be a
break setting or other paragraph attribute that is causing the problem.
Setting the tag to Body Text could be the answer.
