Not bad for a pixel painter!
If I can make a suggestion... you would see quite a lot of the leaves from
the side so they would look thin, especially at the side of the tree.
This would take away some of the 'blobby' effect.
Note: Disregard if you are trying for a pointillist effect, but knowing the
little about you that I do, you want realism.

The grass looks great.

I was leaving well enough alone! You can change the shape of the circle to
make the leaves look more skinny. Also, try to make some more different
greens. The trunk looks really good!

After playing with this, making the nib skinnier for the outer thirds helps
to tree look rounder as Ron suggested.

>Also, try to make some more different greens.

The colors you pick for your pics seem more lifelike, I'll need to keep
trying. There IS quite a variety for the ground foliage - but I know what
you mean in regards to the tree.

>The trunk looks really good!

Thanks! Ancient Romanian Secret, using a bark texture, a merge mode, and the
brightness effect tool :-)

I gave your idea a try, and the top of the tree started looking more
naturally dimensional and real.

Thanks! It was the first grass nib I made - kinda rushed it just to try it
out. I've believed for years that PP is underrated - it keeps surprising me.

Another concept I want to explore soon is creating my own leaf image lists.
I've made other lists before from images found here and there, rocks etc.

With a nice new digital cam I can have much more control over the
components. I have a nice fig tree in my office that I'm about to pull 5-8
leaves off, having full control over the variety and resolution of the list.
This is great, since trying to make good lists with poor low-res images
scraped up from the net is not really using this tool to its potential. Will
post some results when done.

I'm still working on trying to create a nice "tree skeleton" to put leaves
on. My branching attempts need work....Maybe I need to just go look at real
trees and try to break down how they assemble themselves, analyze how to
simulate that with layers in 2D.

In your orig. pics, you seem to have darker areas in the lower parts of the
foliage, surrounded on top by lighter greesn that would be striving towards
the sun, which looks good to me.

Hi Ruth,

Thanks for the info, will play with later tonight if possible.

This has been a really useful thread for me; it's led me to explore and use
PPT much more effectively. Thank you!
One thing; could you please expand your comments past the "...a merge mode"
point? _Which_ merge mode etc. I've explored them now and understanding
their effects takes quite some time. On coming to this thread at first I
spent some time looking for the word "merge" in the list. (Daft me!)

Thanks again for a truly educational thread,

Best,

Zam.

Go to Help in Paint and type in Merge Mode and Paint Mode.

Hi Ruth,

How about 800 pixels tall by whatever width? 72 or 96 DPI will be fine.

Send to Jeff AT pmgindex.com

Thanks, looking forward to it!

Ruth,
I have seen a lot of your work and I am inclined to say that this one is
your best, or at least the most realistic.
Well done and thanks for the peek.

Yes please.
The same size would be fine.
The colors and lighting are great. Couldn't look more like sunshine!
