Painter 8 abruptly stopped opening

Painter 8 will no longer boot, install, uninstall or repair.

I get an error message something like:
You do not have the required key to open this

H_KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/software/classes//shell/openwithpainter, Name

Painter 8 worked fine for years, Anybody got any ideas how to solve
this, barring shooting the computer?
