Which Painter Files To Backup?

Hi...Several times I have seen the advice posted to backup
Painter files with copies in another directory so that one
could avoid an entire reinstall with messed up files.
My question is prompted by the fact that I'm starting from
scratch with a new system and a huge hard drive and I'm
trying to at least begin with an aim to conserving space.
There seems to be some sort of Murphy's Law (or was it
Parkinson's?) that says disk content will rise to exceed
capacity. OK, I know enough to not bother backing up help
files and setup files, but, how do I select others to avoid
just copying the whole 200mb+ folder?
Regards Nick

Nick,

Since I don't now which version you're using..
______________

For Painter 6:

For quite a while it's been recommended that we back up the default
Painter 6 files since they seem to become corrupted rather frequently.
It's not a bad idea to have them on your hard drive because it's so easy
to just grab a copy of the corrupted file from the backup folder and
paste it into the main Painter 6 folder, then launch Painter again.

It's possible, though, to only install the Default Painter Files from
the Painter 6 Application CD. The way to do it is to begin the
installation, then instead of doing a Typical install, choose Custom and
uncheck everything but the Default Files, then finish the installation.

Personally, I'd rather have the backup folder on my hard drive.

__________

Painter 7:

For Painter 7, it's even easier. The Default Files are available on
Painter 7 CD 1, the Application CD, and all you need to do is copy them
into the main Painter 7 folder on your hard drive and remove their Read
Only attribute, then launch Painter 7. No reinstallation necessary.
They're found in the Painter 7 CD 1 > Default Content Files folder.
Here's the list with as much explanation as I can think of right now:

Painter.frs (Selection Portfolio Library)

Painter.nzl (default Nozzle Library)

Painter.pap (default Papers Library)

Painter.pcs (default.. mind's gone blank, sorry)

Painter.por (default Image Portfolio Library)

Painter.ptl (default Patterns Library)

Painter.set (default Gradients, Looks, and Lighting Libraries, also user
saved Palette Layouts)

Painter.ssd (default Scripts Library)

Printer.stg

Sorry; my omission,I have Painter 6 with the 6.1 Patch installed.

I guess I didn't explain in my original post that I don't really know
exactly which files are the "Default Files". I have not been able to
find any group of files with that label either on the two CD's that
came with Painter 6 or in the installed directory. I could assume that they
would be the entire Painter directory (all 200+MB) installed in my
system. Looking at CD no.1 I see 5 folders: auto95, Content, Documentation,
Tutorial and Utilities. I could assume that "Content"
would be the group of default files I'm looking for or is it? Then
again maybe some of the 20 or so individual files also on that CD
are also default files.

-------------------
Yes, would that I had Painter 7 instead of 6. I guess it would be
reaching to assume that the file list you gave would apply as well to
Painter 6, but it's just that kind of information I need for Painter 6.
Maybe the right approach would be to backup everything and then after a
time I would have a reasonable idea as to which files I need the backup
for and could trim down the size of my backup. Then again how am I to
know what new goofs of my part will need a never before used backup?

===================

I do hope I'm not massaging this word "default" to the point where it
ceases to have any meaning...like repeating the phrase "toy boat" over
and over again.
Thanks for your response. Anything further you could suggest would be
appreciated as well. Regards Nick

Parts of my earlier message are pasted below (read them carefully and
you'll see that I've explained how to get the default files from the
Painter 6 Application CD and also given you a list and explanation of
the default files. (Sorry, I failed to mention that the default file
names are the same for Painter 6 and Painter 7, even though the content
may be slightly different between the versions. For instance, the
Pattern Library in Painter 7 has different Patterns from the Pattern
Library in Painter 6.):

With the default files backed up (or even knowing it's easy to install
them from the CD, there's not much to worry about. If all else fails,
you can Uninstall, then reinstall Painter, following the correct
procedure when installing the 6.1 patch. If you need the instructions,
let me know and I'll send them to you.

No, "default files" is the phrase most commonly used in both Painter
documention and by Painter users. You're doing ok. :o)

Relax and enjoy Painter now. <g>
