I think, since a physical memory dump, experiencing in W2K with Painter7
working at the time, I'm getting the message when starting Painter,
(Panel with red circle and white X) >Error in "Artist Pastel Chalk.xml"
line 1 col. 1<, saying >unrecognized character<.
Already tried to find a difference with a variant of that brush I have.
But can not find it.
Asked a fellow illustrator with Painter 7 to send me his version of the
file.
Deleted my version and pasted the new one instead.
Same message, even after a system restart and deleting the Pre-built
Brush-file.
No luck yet.
Is there anything else I can do besides trying Set Up over the excisting
version or Uninstall and a new install?

Just after uninstalling and reinstalling, I thought of the fact that the
second xml file (c_Artist Pastel Chalk.xml) had to be renewed also.
Bad luck for me, nobody here could help me on that.

You don't need to replace the brush variant for which the file name
begins with "c_" as those are the cached variants that hold temporary
user settings.
You can delete all of them and all that will happen is that the default
variant will remain and be the one that's used.
For instance, the first time a brush variant is used, Painter 7 and
Painter 8 automatically create a cached variant with a file name
matching the default brush variant except that it begins with "c_".
Then, when you use the Restore Default Variant command, that cached
variant is automatically deleted.
If, in Painter 7, you hold down the Alt/Option key and choose the
Restore Default Variant command, all brush variants in the currently
loaded brush library are restored to their default state and all cached
variants are automatically deleted. (For some reason, the current
variant is sometimes not restored along with the others, so if you
choose the Restore Default Variant command again without holding down
the Alt/Option key, it should also be restored to its default state.)
If, in Painter 8, you choose the Restore All Default Variants command,
all brush variants in the currently loaded brush library are restored to
their default state and all cached variants are automatically deleted.
Try restoring all brush variants in the currently loaded brush library
to their default state and see if that helps.

Thanks Jinny
For the lesson. Probably just deleting the Cached variant would have
solved my problem then.
Reinstalling with all the Chalkbrushes deleted, solved the problem too.
But now after reinstall when I open a file, I used to Drag the
filewindow excactly to the proportions of the space I had within Painter
on my Mainmonitor. Occasionally I push the F12 button which I gave the
ZOOM TO FIT - command. It did it's job and left the window at the same
size. No matter what size of the file.
After the reinstall the file window fits to the file. I hate that.
I can't seem to find how I can restore it, to act as before?
Do you know it?

OOOOOPS! Forgot to install the 7 Update.
I now have a masterly painted blush on my face.
