Brian,

Painter automatically records scripts of whatever you do. Depending on
the number of days you set in Preferences, it can save them for up to
10. I think the default is 1 day.

In addition, you can record an individual script and save it as long as
you want and to use again whenever you want to.

Jinny,
I think in Photoshop, an action is a group of commands which allow you to
automaticaly apply a set of tasks to an existing image. As I understand it,
this is not the same as Painter's scripting, which are essentially a
recording of brushstrokes and settings for subsequent playback and not
intended to act upon an existing image. Please correct me if I am wrong on
this.

After reading the manual, it looks like Painter uses scripts to create
macros which appear to work in a similar way to what PS describes as
actions.

To further elaborate in answer to Brian's initial request, scripts in
Painter give you a very high level of undo, create macros to perform
repetitive tasks, operations or commands. Scripts can be played back at a
different resolutions and can also be played back with a different art
materials from the ones chosen to create the original. They can be edited
and inserted into another script. The script recorder also saves values,
locations, colours and textures used.

Do you purchase a copy now or wait for version 7 is probably going to be
your next question <g>

David,

I'm not an expert on Painter scripting and have minimal experience using
the feature. What little experience I have tells me that we can record a
script, then play it back on any image. That may not be true, so I
suggest reading the User Guide and asking specific questions on all or
most of the Painter related lists/message boards/newsgroups to learn
more from Painter users who have experience with Painter scripting on a
fairly regular basis. Two who might be helpful are Jeremy Sutton and
Richard Pope. Also, Karen Sperling may be able to offer some help as she
writes and teaches Painter and knows the program well.. since the early
days of Painter.

Based on these posts it would appear I can work w/Scripts to automate some
of my work flow which is the objective. I've fiddled w/scripts in Painter
classic (which is a great app BTW ) but it obviously lacked the complete
feature set of Painter 6.x which I'm really looking fwd to getting my hands
on !

As for waiting for 7, not a chance. Better to get on with it and deal with
the 7.x issue if / when it's released. I've been doing the computer graphics
gig for too long and realize there's never a good time to jump in...just get
in the stream and start swimming :-D LOL

Thanks again for the quick replies, the info is very helpful

Cheers
Brian
