Pick up colors from picture?

I'm not sure how to ask this question. I'm not talking about cloning.
I'm thinking more like an artists palette, with different colors
partially mixed. When an artist dips into this and strokes, the
different colors streak the stroke in proportion to what the artist
picked up in the brush. Or if he/she uses a sponge to pick up the
colors, and dabs the canvas, the colors will be sort of like they were
on the palette, but not in the same locations.

Can Painter pick up colors this way from a photograph. Can you stroke
or dab the brush onto a picture, then stroke the colors onto a canvas,
not as a clone, but rather as if you had picked up some colors from a
palette.

The closest ways I can think of at the moment to use Painter to do what
you describe are:

Clone painting with either the Cloners brush variants or with many of
the other brush variants set to Clone Color - This process takes color
information from the source (original) image and allows you to paint it
into your destination image. In other words, it allows you to "pick up
colors from a picture". Using the wide variety of brush variants that
are available, the result can be an exact copy (usng the Straight Cloner
variant) an oil brush look (Oil Cloner variant), a soft, fuzzy look
(Melt Cloner variant), or any number of other looks. These brush
variants can be used together in a single painting to affect certain
areas jof the painting differently. For instance, you might want to use
the Melt Cloner variant to make the background out of focus and other
brush variants to bring out detail in some areas of the painting. It
doesn't need to look at all like a copy of the photo.

In Painter 7, we can create a Color Set based on an image - You could
create a Color Set based on your photo, then pick colors from it to
paint.

Some of Painter's brush variants can be made to paint multiple colors in
a single stroke - Using the a Color Set made from colors in your photo,
you could paint multiple colors with a single brush variant.
