I just received my copy of Knockout 2 and find to my dismay that it does
not support Photoshop CS nor Corel Painter 8. If Corel is not even
updating it to work with their own products, how likely it is that they
will bother with Photoshop CS?
Should I return the product while I still have return privileges?
Thanks,
Avi
I found by trial and error that, at least for the simple tutorial, the
product works but there are some problems:
1. The installation programs created the plugins in the Knockout 2
installation directory but never installs it into the appropriate
directories in Painter nor Photoshop. I had to copy the plugins
manually to the appropriate directories. If this is documented, I did
not see it.
2. The tutorial says that in Painter, you have to select the image then
cut and paste it before running the plugin. This does not work. The
instruction should be the same as for Photoshop. You need to duplicate
the layer and then invoke Knockout 2.
I don't know yet if everything works with the above 2 application, but
Corel needs to update their installation program or at least their
documentation.

I didn't have any trouble with PSCS and KO 2, which was already
installed when I put in PS on my machine. the only thing not working
correctly is 16-bit pictures, which can be imported into KO but with
very interesting results (they simply turn transparent).

What drives me nuts is the unpredictability of the software. Sometimes
it launches properly, but most of the time it does not.
For example, when going through the first tutorial using Painter 8.
Most of the time, KO 2 will launch, but there would be no image loaded.
Other times, I get the very cryptic error dialog that says:
"File I/O Error: KnockOut encountered a serious error importing the
file. Please confirm that this is a valid file and that you have the
latest version of QuickTime."
and then KO 2 closes and I am back in Painter 8.
Well, I have no idea what it means and yes, I do have the latest version
of QT.
It is very possible I am doing something wrong, but I am not sure what.
Again, following the tutorial working on the bear.tif file:
1. I open the file
2. At this point I cannot duplicate the layer, so I follow the
instructions in the tutorial and I select the whole image, Cut it and
then Paste it back. Now I have an empty canvas and a new layer, Layer 1
which is selected.
3. Launching KO: Effects>KnockOut 2>Load Working Layer. This time it works.
I Close the image and the when trying to repeat steps 1-3, I get the
above error. When I get the error I duplicate the layer and try to open
KO 2 on the new layer. No luck, this time KO opens, but there is no image.
Now I try the same with the middle layer and it works.
Again, I am trying to open KO 2 on the middle layer and now I get the
blasted error message again.
On my laptop, using Photoshop CS, I sometimes manage to bring the layer
into KO for editing, on my desktop I am yet to succeed once.
As I said, there is nothing predictable in this application.
