I have recently had my machine upgraded to W2K. My company build is such
that only our IT guys can install the software - stop the employees from
installing non standard software regardless of whether they need it for
their jobs or not!
Anyway, the installation of CD 9 is iffy enough, but if done properly I
don't have any problems. However, since the re-build, it no longer opens new
or old documents (I have set the right printer) and shows up these errors:
1) As it completes the first start-up screen I get the message:
Unable to add office compatible entries to registry
2) When I either open an old file or try to create a new file I get the
following series of messages:
1)Invalid custom directory specified in corelapp.ini
2)Error opening C:\....\coreldraw.cdt
3)Error writing C:\....\coreldraw.cdt
4)Condition #5000-DRAWDOC2-0424
Unexpected condition encountered
5)Failed to create new document
When I try to open a file after it has been through those messages it hangs
at 4%
Are these error to do with the company W2K build on my machine? The IT guys
here don't know Corel so could spend days trying to sort the problem out.
Can anyone help?
Thanks,
Abbie
Corel Draw 9 works perfectly on a stand alone Win2k machine (with
exception of slight scrap book issue). There may be problems if this is
a network setup and the paths have been incorrectly set or a shared
printer can not be found.
Best bet is to explain the errors to the network admin guys and get them
to run diagnostics.

This sounds to me like a bad installation by IT. Was Draw on it
originally before Win2k upgrade?
I'd get them to uninstall, see that Corel 9's directories are deleted
and the registry is clean. Then re-install as local on your machine,
accepting default locations (unless, of course, there is a specific
reason not to)..
The printer probably needs to be available and on line when you start
draw or open a file. It could be that the path to the printer is so
long (if on a network) that it may not be 'happy'. If this is the case
after re-installation (possible error message will be 'failed to
create document - or suchlike if still not working properly) set up a
PostScript printer driver on file as default. See if this helps.

Good corperate strategy. Fine way to make sure that the job gets done in a
standard way. Oh well, that's my high horse. W2k needs tinkering up and
down the line after installing. Once it is sorted out, it is simply great!

Bad install of CorelDraw. Typical messages of a bad install. Was the W2k a
clean install? In other words was /all/ your software reinstalled after W2k
went on? If they just slopped out and did it as an upgrade you are not
likely to ever get things untangled. You may need to search out and install
new video card drivers even though a generic one was supplied with W2k.
You need to uninstall Corel. Then go into the hard drive and delete all the
remnants. Download and have ready the two huge service packs for Corel.
Install W2k service pack 1. (W2k Pack 2 seems to cause problems for some
folks and is not a critical update.) Install CorelDraw 9. Do not reboot.
Install CorelDraw SP1. DO NOT REBOOT! Install Corel SP2. Now reboot.
When you open Draw or Paint your network printer MUST be online. Otherwise
you need to install a generic print to PS file and set that as default for
your machine.
Good luck. It will be worth it, but you may be in for some screaming!

Have IT log in as Admin and see if Draw will run. Sounds like a permissions
problem.

What's the score with the service packs? Back in the days of v8 I had
probs after using service packs and now I'm on v9 I didn't want to risk
trying out the service packs.
Is there anyting really cool in the Corel SPs I'm missing out on?

Yes, what about:-

CorelDRAW 9® SP 1 Revisions
File IO
The ability to open/import Corel Print House and Corel Print Office
files was added.
Redraw and Open times were improved while running on Windows 95/98
for files containing a great deal of text.
Files containing Text on a path residing on a master layer will now
open correctly.
Text
Various issues were corrected when separating multiple linked
paragraph text frames. In these cases, the text would not re-flow
correctly and the file would not read correctly when re-opened. The
issue as been addressed for future files.
Font combos would sometimes appear to have a discrepancy if the
option to display the applied font type was disabled. The combos have
been changed to display the currently applied typeface at all times
including this circumstance.
Far East Operating System Specific PDF now works with Asian chars,
however, they are output as curves.
Type Assist's handling of Asian characters was improved.
Several default units were changed to millimeters.
Effects
Convert to Outline stability was improved. In some very specific
cases converting an outline to an object then applying an Artistic
media stroke would result in an error.
Interactive Fills, Uniform Fills, Transparent Fills and Outlines
Color models in the Fill Color dialog are now consistent when
switching to another window setting, or to another color of a
different color model or when switching between objects.
In the Color Palette docker, upon relaunching the application, the
behavior of default palette was changed so that it remains set to the
one selected by the user, instead of resetting back to the CorelDRAW
Palette.
Color Styles
The Auto-Create feature was improved to allow the user to double
click on a color swatch that was created using this method.
Object Transformation and Editing
The Artistic Media feature was enhanced so that scaled objects now
maintain their size after node editing an artistic media stroke.
Added to CorelDRAW 9 is the ability to return to CorelDRAW 8's Snap
to Object behavior. This can speed up dragging of complex drawings
significantly, but can result in less precise snapping. This new
option is available through the Tools menu's Options dialog (Tools,
Options...). Double-Click on the Document section of the Options
dialog's tree, and then select Grid. Two new radio buttons can be
found at the bottom of the Grid options page which allow you to
alternate between snapping behaviors. This setting is maintained in
your individual documents.
CorelDRAW 9 snaps objects to nodes on both the target and source
objects AND the position of the cursor while dragging. CorelDRAW 8
only snaps to nodes on the target object from the position of the
cursor while dragging the source object.
The new method of Snapping has been improved and is more precise.
Display/User Interface Related
The Status Bar has been improved to display radius and roundness
when either one or 4 corners with same roundness are selected.
Object Size and Position items can now be customized into the status
bar.
The Status Bar for rectangles with ALL corners rounded to the same
value will include the absolute unit value of the roundness. This
absolute unit value for roundness will also display if you have only
ONE corner selected. Due to space constraints on the Status Bar,
CorelDRAW 9 will not show the absolute unit value if you have more
than one, but less than all, corners selected for rounding.

one selected by the user, instead of resetting back to the CorelDRAW
Palette.

Well, I guess Graeme answered this!
I'm a creature of duty. I noticed when I found this ng that the C-Techs
started every answer with "Have you installed the service pack?" So, I
never thought about it - just did it.
Now I know why!

I was the same a long time ago, but these days I usually want know
exactly why I'm changing something if it appears to be working
correctly. The enhancements in the SPs certainly do sound interesting.
