That is not a correct method to place anything into PageMaker (you
should always use the File > Place command to place images or EPS files
into a PageMaker layout), and if that file is sent to a service bureau
they will most likely reject it for bad/missing links.

No, this has nothing to do with platform - linking images is the
standard procedure for all applications that support it. In fact,
CorelDRAW is the only app that embeds by default (and works much better
this way IMO); most others such as FreeHand, Illustrator, PageMaker and
InDesign link with the option to embed, and Quark only links.
This does not count when you save/export to a "portable" format such as
an EPS; I'm only referring to the native documents (.cdr, .pmd, .indd,
...qxd, .ai, etc.)
There's a good rationale for linking rather than embedding: when you're
working on a layout and need to update an image or illustration, if the
file is linked it will update in the layout automatically (or you can
force this behavior using the application's links manager) without the
need to reimport the file.
In the end it really has more to do with personal preference than
anything else - if you send a layout file with the images *properly*
embedded the service bureau should not have any trouble with it. But
copy & paste will not provide that proper embedding; the import/place
menu option or the links manager should provide this option.

Not always - depending on what you're pasting the Links Manager may show
an entry such as "NA - Photoshop Image" or "??? VISIO Drawing" which are
still unusable and would be counted as a bad link (unless the files was
also supplied separately, in which case the service bureau could relink
the files if they were so inclined, but could also legitimately reject
the files and ask the client to reestablish the proper links).

There's a distinction between linking images (the way Baud intended for
images to be handled, as you so well explainedd) and OLE linking, a
different matter altogether, one with cloven hoof, forked tail, horns and a
distinctly sulphurous aroma to it.
