Problem 1. I have been sending PDF files (made in CorelDraw10) as
attachments. This has been working very well, but last week
the method failed. When a recipient tries to open the PDF he sees the
message "An unrecognized token was found", or something like, "the end of
the message was not recorded". AI files do not work either, nor do .eps
files.
Problem 2. When I send the above messages to myself they go immediately to
the "Deleted Items" folder in Outlook Express. When I open them the
attachments behave as above.
I suspect these two problems are related since they appeared at the same
time.
I have looked on the Adobe site, but although it has an entry on this topic,
the remedies I have tried do not work. Microsoft does not mention the
problem.
Has anyone else come across this?
Any suggestions please?
"Deleted Items" Why? Do you have a rule that sends mail from you to the bin?
I've had some issues with this when files were opened on a Mac...
In your case you have something in the file the PDF driver don't like.
(guessing)
I'd try embedding fonts and have a play with those options...
If it's not that try an empty page with a box on it to be sure simple stuff
works.
Then try deleting items on the page until you can suss what is causing the
error.
Or using a 3rd PDF driver that works as a print to file...
You'll find one here but at $99 US. Acrobat Distiller is defineately a more
flexible alternative and I suspect you will get more use out of it. Or a
Generic postscript printer driver and ghostscript may provide a free
solution.
They tell me that in version 12 it all works... So that may well be the best
solution.

Many thanks for having given so much thought to this. After I posted the
message I spent some more time on helplines. Your first suggestion was the
one which cured Problem 2. I had somehow added my own address to the blocked
senders list, so removing it solved the problem.
As for Problem 1 - not being able to send PDF files as attachments - I tried
the following:
I uninstalled Outlook Express 6, but the problem persisted with Outlook
Express 5 (the earliest version I have installed).
The Adobe website has an entry regarding this error message
http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/18b42.htm in which it recommends some
work-arounds. I have listed the suggestions (below) with notes about how I
got on with each of them. I noticed on searching the
Internet that several people had encountered the problem, (though it is
quite rare), but no-one had found a solution. Incidentally, if I open the
message in 'Sent messages', I can open the attachment perfectly. So the
problem seems to reside in the transmission process in Outlook Express.
I guessed the only remedy left would be to reformat the whole computer and
hope
Outlook Express reinstalled correctly. This would be a big operation for me,
so I thought perhaps I should forget Outlook Express entirely and send
attachments
only via Wanadoo.
However, now you have sent your reply, Yani, I shall look forward to
investigating https://www.amyuni.com, and hope to find a less onerous
solution
Many thanks again for your carefully thought out suggestions.
Kind regards
Gareth
Here are the suggestions from Adobe...
http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/18b42.htm
Ask the PDF file's creator (that is me !) to do one or more
of the following:
-- Upload the original PDF file to the Web or network server again. For
assistance, contact the Web server's administrator or the network
administrator.
NO GOOD
-- Re-create the PDF file, and upload it to the Web or network server again.
NO GOOD
-- Remove any spaces from the filename, and upload the PDF file to the Web
or network server again.
NO GOOD
-- Upload the PDF file to the Web server using a different FTP application.
WORKS WITH WANADOO
-- Move the PDF file onto the Web or network server using a method other
than FTP (for example, copy the file).
I DO NOT UNDERSTAND THIS
-- Send the PDF file as an attachment to an e-mail message using a different
encoding method. Refer to the e-mail application's documentation for
instructions on creating a new e-mail message and attaching a file to it.
I DO NOT UNDERSTAND THIS
-- Send the PDF file as an attachment to an e-mail message, making sure to
zip or stuff the fie before sending it.
NO GOOD
that's a good solution for big files...
humm what size is this PDF?
Your not exceeding a mail box limit are you? Normally about 5mb.
You normally get a bit of free web space from your ISP if not you can get
some cheap other places.
A google search will find something about web space.

In fact keep the file name to ????????.pdf no space or funny stuff.

Make sure it's attached and not an Icon in the document.
In Outlook (not express) I send the message as plain text with the
attachment.
In the message write "I send you ???????.pdf which is a xxx Mb file"

Finally send me the file, aka...@optusnet.com.au
I try never to send files by email as it slows down mail retrieval for some
clients.
Better to upload the file to a Web Space and send a link by email.
If I do send a PDF via email I try to keep the size under 500k.
DO NOT REFORMAT NOTHING or do anything drastic!
If your concerned do an online virus check... www.norton.com
Or a disk check... etc.
Make sure and delete all temp files and reboot the system.
Yani.
I very much appreciate your help, although I am not sure my knowledge and
understanding are up to taking full advantage of it! Also I am reluctant to
spend much more time, having already spent hours on this. The pressure is
off now I have found sending files via Wanadoo works effectively. I think I
shall stick with this method until when/if something goes wrong. All other
programmes are functioning normally as far as I can tell.
I have made notes in reply to some of your suggestions (below), and shall
take up your kind offer to send you a file (via Wanadoo). I still feel the
problem resides in my Outlook Express however. I have tried sending old
files which used to open perfectly on the recipient's computer, and find
they no longer do so. I cannot think of any extra software I have added
which might conflict with Outlook Express, nor any other problems with other
programmes. I guess the programme itself has just flipped a switch
somewhere!
Thanks again

Sorry. I did not understand Adobe's suggestion properly. You must be right.>

It is about 1.4mb, and has worked perfectly many times before.

Thanks for these suggestions, but the method worked very well before this
problem appeared, and I am reluctant to change the usual way of delivering
the file. It is one my recipients are used to and happy with. However I
shall look forward to experimenting.

I am not too concerned yet since everything else works normally, so I shall
keep this idea in reserve.

Thanks for replying to the email and PDF attachment I sent to your private
address. Delighted the PDF opened with no problems, though this is what I
would expect since I sent it via Wanadoo. Please let me know if you think I
should try to repair Outlook Express. Otherwise, now that I have a way of
sending files, I am inclined to leave things as they are. It is frustrating
not to have resolved the problem, but time is money....!
Thanks again for all the time you have spent on this, and for your helpful
ideas.
Gareth
I've had some good success sending big files on XP Messenger.
But you best solution is to upload to a web space. That's a whole learning
curse... I mean curve.
Yani
Oh check the stuff I uploaded on Colour Management. These some really good
info there, especially if you use an Epson printer.

Just found it! I was searching for it the wrong way. It looks very useful
and I shall enjoy reading through.
