I bought CorelDraw 12 and before I open up the package, I'd like to know if
I can import text from Word documents into paragraph text. I've been
reading all the product info and nothing is mentioned. Does it do this? I'd
like it to replace my old Ventura publishing program and CorelDraw 9.
Thanks, Pat

I'm not quite sure about importing, but if you copy all of the text in Word
and you paste it inside text blocks in Draw, you are asked if you want to
keep the Word format or apply another, which is a nice feature...

Replacing Ventura with this... I wouldn't advice that. Ventura is Ventura.
Draw is mainly for illustrating, not for extensive multi-paged documents...

Yes, we can import .doc files.

If you like, email me the .doc file, I'll import it and send you back a PDF
so you can see what it looks like.

Tony "Corel" told me how I can import text and link text frames in Draw12,
so that issue is resolved. Many thanks!! I'll be using Draw12 for sure now.

Pat,

Yes, you can import the text from Word files.

No, CorelDRAW is not a replacement for Ventura.

It works with simple texts. But step a bit further - and problems
appear. Say, some simple symbols from Word (like Greek letters, arrows,
special brackets...) turn into something else at will. Sometimes they
look OK at Corel screen but turn into blanc square at print or print
preview... To say nothing about equation editors or tables... Life is
not easy.
And sure - Corel can't replace Ventura or any the like.

Printing issues should of been fixed in the print patch.

If Importing characters isn't working then try copying from word and paste
special > Rich Text Format into CorelDRAW. Sometimes we can read the RTF off
the clipboard more easily then we can the .DOC file.

Tables are better in CGS 12.

Agreed.

Tony, thanks for your prompt answer. Waiting for SP.
This problem with symbols appears not only with Word - same with WMF
files imported into Corel (or back - with WMF's exported from Corel,
symbols like text, and imported anywhere else - Word or not), or with
symbols copied from Windows character table. Sure, I can convert them
all into curves, but it's not so convenient for editing.

Tables - yes, they are improving.

BTW, don't you think that Corel's sub/superscripts are too small? 50%?
In most DTPs they are 67-70%, to my knowledge? May be I've missed
something, and there is a way to change this percentage by default?

Thanks again. Aleks Vtyurin
