coreldraw files blank when opened / zero file size on save or move

I've spent many hours trawling thru the various newsgroups, the Corel
website and the web in general and have yet to find anyone describing
this problem as we are seeing it.

We are using CorelDRAW GS11 (License Pack version - displays as v11.633
in Help). This is an occasional issue (not frequent) where when a file
is opened (sometimes it is a v7 file, or v11 file) it opens as a blank
document (completely empty), and yet the last time it was used, it had
contents. The size of the file certainly indicates it has contents (can
be Mb's in size on disk). Cannot import it - you get a message that the
file "is not importable using the selected filter, or this format is
not supported". The cmx rename trick does not work.

If you copy the file to another location, the resultant file has a 0 Kb
file size and when opened is again blank. If you open the original
(blank content) file and Save As, it produces either a much smaller
sized file, or a 0 Kb sized file. Again this is blank (even when
re-opened).

If you open a dos command window and try to output the file into the
window using the TYPE command, the it produces the error "The handle is
invalid", rather than "RIFF... CDR7vrsn..." as with a healthy file.

I have also tried using cdrconv, but there is no resulting file!?
Setting CD to default workspace makes no difference.

Some times these files have bitmaps in them, but not always;
Have got this problem with quite a few different users on different
PCs;
Seems that the corruption happens when the file is saved, or copied;
Is not an issue with being out of space on local hd, or on server;
Often a CD7 file, but not always (we have seen this with v8 and v11
files too);
Files are always on the server (NetWare 5.1SP7, NSS volumes), not HD;
Can appear when a file is being copied from HD to the server;


PCs are Dell OptiPlex (G1, GX100, GX150, GX240, GX270), varying HD,
varying RAM (min. 256Mb), various graphics cards;
OS is Windows 2000 Professional SP3/SP4;
Netware Client is v4.83SP2;
We can't install any CorelDRAW Service Packs as they are not designed
for the Licensing Pack version of CorelDRAW;


We would like to know:
A). what is causing this problem / why?
B). how can we fix / mitigate it?
