-WPWin Fatal Error-
The WPWin information in the windows registration database is missing or
incorrect and the WPWin registration information file (WPWIN7.REG) cannot be
located.
I screwed it up because I tried to change it so that it wouldn't open files
with the extension (.dat). Could somebody whos a registry expert look
through the following entrys and see if you can find the mistake(s)? These
are all the entries that I get when I search for WPWin...

This may be fairly simple-minded, and may make things worse, I'm by NO means an

Finally at least back up the registry before attempting to edit it.

Generally, trying to solve a software issue by hacking through the
registry is more trouble than it's worth. Back up your work files and
uninstall. Run RegClean for good measure. This program will usually
fix the gross errors and delete the dangling keys for programs and files
that no longer exist.
Then re-boot. Use Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring up the task list. Close
everything except "Explorer" and "Systray." This can be a little
tedious, because if you have a lot of programs installed, you may find
that a long list (10 or more!) of stuff is up an running in the
background, otherwise invisible to you. Sometimes this stuff,
especially TSR anti-virus programs, can bollix up an installation.
Then re-install WP7. If it reinstalls smoothly, your problem will
probably be solved. I say 'if' and 'probably' because I once ran into a
situation where WP7 would not allow a re-installation until I went into
the Registry and deleted every reference to WP7 manually. The uninstall
function does not clean up everything. This problem is unlikely to
afflict you but if you get error messages on re-install you may have to
go into the Registry whether you like it or not.
If you do, remember... ALWAYS BACK UP YOUR REGISTRY BEFORE YOU MODIFY
IT!!!!
The files are named "User.dat" and "System.dat". If you can't see them,
it may be because they are hidden. Double-click "My Computer", pull
down "view" menu, click on "options...", click on "View" tab. Click on
"show all files" radio button. Click "OK". These files should then be
visible in your "Windows" folder. From "Explorer", create a folder on
your root directory called "REGBACK" or something similar. Select and
right-drag these two files to the "REGBACK" folder. Click on "Copy
Here".
Now, if there is a disaster and your machine won't boot after you futzed
with the Registry, you can boot to DOS, change to the "REGBACK"
directory. Type "attrib -r -h -s c:\regback\user.dat". Then "attrib -r
-h -s c:\regback\system.dat". This ringamarole will allow you to see
these hidden, system, read-only files in DOS. Then, still in the
REGBACK directory, mind you, type " copy system.dat \windows" and "copy
user.dat \windows". Then, lastly, use the "attrib" command to restore
the files to their previous condition thusly:
Go to Windows directory and type "attrib +r +h +s c:\windows\user.dat"
and "attrib +r +h +s c:\windows\system.dat".
Then reboot. Ba-da-boom, Ba-da-bing... your system should be back in
business.
The point of all this should be clear enough. Registry editing is NOT
for the faint of heart. Recovering from a misstep is not too difficult
(IF YOU'VE MADE A BACKUP!!) but it is a pain in the ass!

Be aware however that if the machine is setup for multiple users the
user.dat that is affected, is the one of the current user who does the
install/uninstall. If each user has his own settings, than the user.dat
file in question is stored in Windows\Profiles\<user names>\User.dat.
