We have recently installed a LAN at work. I would appreciate comments
on how best to install a Pdox10 application on the network. Could
installing Pdox Runtime on the server be a good way of sharing the
database files with a number of users? I am new to networking - so any
advice would be a great help. Thank you.

the data has to go on the server.. that's a given.. but paradox itself, the
BDE, and the private directory should be on the local drives for better
performance.. yes, it's easier to load paradox and the BDE on the server,
too, but that can create a lot of excess network traffic.. the trade-off is
that when you load all that stuff locally, configuration changes must be
propogated all over the place..

This is particularly interesting, since I am preparing an install for a
network.

Are there particular problems with setting each workstation to use a network
version of idapi[32].cfg?

Then there is only one location where the configuration stuff (for the BDE)
needs to be maintained.

This could be done with the -o switch in the icon, or the BDE could be set
up to use that .cfg file as the default.

Any positives or negatives appreciated.

hey everyone.. have you ever read Bill Todd's "how to deploy it all" thing?

http://www.diamondsg.com/morelinks.htm

to a great extent, it's completely different from what we've all been doing..

I don't see a link to anything by Bill Todd, nor a link to anything about
"how to deploy..".

Is this that page I complained that I couldn't find stuff on before? <g>

Sharing the BDE on a Network by Bill Todd.. it's the last item in the 2nd section on the left, right before the "oplocks" stuff

yes.. I renamed it, and renamed the link from the main links page.. nobody else has reported being unable to navigate the two columns of links <g>

he makes a real good case for "put one copy of the BDE on the server"

I just asked (on borland.public.bde group) if he had updated suggestions
from that article (1998).

None. <g>

Thanks for this, Steven. Very timely for me.

This is what I use for our installations, it certainly makes it easier to
"tweak" the BDE settings since only one one copy of the Idapi.cfg needs to
be maintained in each site. I think it may be useful to set the "Win 3.1 and
NT" option for the cfg file too, as I have seen occasions where the Registry
settings on some machines displaced the actual settings that I expected to
be there.
