I would like to thank all the panellists and participants in the session - as well as Pari for doing all the heavy lifting organising the session as well as chairing it so successfully. The notion and support for Core Internet Values is growing and is getting understood. It is also clear that many of these values are under threat and that we need to be particularly vigilant in recent times. I hope we'll all be able to rally more people to the cause and we'll continue to organise sessions not only at IGF but also at other events, whenever there is the ability to propose a session on this topic.
If you would like to co-organise a session on Core Internet Values in a local, regional, or international event that you are attending, please email me directly off-list.
I should add that a small group is currently preparing the joint DC-CIV and DC-NN proposal for the forthcoming IGF, with the title: Bridging Internet & AI Governance: From Theory to Practice Essentially, this will be a follow-up to our successful IGF 2024 Riyadh Session: IGF 2024 DC-CIV & DC-NN From Internet Openness to AI Openness. . On Wednesday March 12 2025, at 10:30-12:00 PDT (17:30-19:00 UTC) the Dynamic Coalition on Core Internet Values (DC-CIV) and the At-Large Advisory Committee (ALAC) will host a session 'Core Internet Values: Evolution and Challenges for ICANN"\' at the ICANN 82 Community Forum in Seattle, Washington.
The concept of core Internet values has been a cornerstone of the Internet’s architecture. However, with seismic shifts in technology, governance models, and geopolitical dynamics, these values require adjustment to remain relevant in today’s rapidly evolving environment. This session will examine how such adjustments could affect ICANN’s remit and mission. It will explore the balance between preserving foundational principles and adapting to emerging realities, leveraging insights from technological, governance, and geopolitical trends, alongside ICANN’s operational experience. The discussion will identify necessary changes, their implications for ICANN, and strategies to address these challenges while upholding its core purpose.
