Dear Colleagues,

this is to let you know that I have booked a FLASH Session at the forthcoming EuroDIG in Strasbourg, on 14 May 2025 at 09:30 CEST.
Flash sessions at EuroDIG are usually only 25 minutes in length, but allow for the presentation of a single topic.

We have several opportunities for topics to be addressed at this Flash Session:

- presentation of the forthcoming session at the Global IGF in Lillestrøm.
- follow-up to the last session we had at the Global IGF in Riyadh - or perhaps present conclusions of that discussion
- make a presentation about Core Internet Values to get more people to learn about them and discuss them

Or perhaps you have a different proposal?

At this point, I'd also like to find out who will be attending EuroDIG in person and be interested to take part (as a speaker) in this Flash Session?

Kindest regards,

Olivier Crépin-Leblond
DC-CIV Chair

Hello Olivier,
Here is a relevant but different proposal:

Title: From Talk to Action: Safeguarding Core Internet Values in Today’s Digital Governance

Over the years, FLASH sessions at EuroDIG and the Global IGF have provided vibrant spaces for community-driven dialogue. But how do we ensure that these conversations translate into action, especially when it comes to defending and evolving the Core Internet Values that underpin the open, global Internet?

This session will reflect on how past FLASH discussions, such as those at the Global IGF in Riyadh, have contributed to real-world initiatives or influenced policy. It will also examine whether and how Core Internet Values are being upheld, challenged, or reshaped in current governance processes, from content regulation and AI oversight to digital sovereignty debates.

Cheers,

Pari

Dear Pari,

interesting topic, but do you have the data on how Flash discussions have contributed to real-world initiatives or influenced policy? Is this published?
Kindest regards,

Olivier

Dear all,

On a different session, but still about EuroDIG, may I call your attention on Main Topic 4 - see https://eurodigwiki.org/wiki/Transatlantic_rift_on_Freedom_of_Expression_%E2%80%93_MT_04_2025.

The incipit of the session description reads: “A growing transatlantic divide over freedom of expression calls for an exploration into the baseline of shared principles and the specific areas of division between the US and European regulators”. I personally believe that the “shared principles” must include a common view of the Core Internet Values, making our participation important.

Best regards,
Roberto

Dear Olivier, Pari, and all taking part,

good luck! I hope you have the attendance our message needs!

Maybe a fitting summary would be "If you are here it's because the Internet's core values are still holding up - so what are you going to do to keep them going?"

Like many in the Americas it is likely I won't be able to connect to the session, so hopeful for a recording or transcript and your notes on attendance and impact. Cheers and best wishes!

Hi all

Unfortunately, this session overlaps with the "São Paulo Multistakeholder Guidelines” session, that I should attend as former HLEC member.
It is an unfortunate coincidence, as the two topics are quite interconnected, and the potential audience widely overlaps.
I will also rely on the recording.

Cheers,
Roberto

May 14 2025 – the IGF Dynamic Coalition on Core Internet Values (DC-CIV) held a flash session ‘From Talk to Action: Safeguarding Core Internet Values in Today’s Digital Governance ‘ at the 2025 Pan-European dialogue on Internet governance (EuroDIG) at the Palais de l’Europe in Strasbourg France.

The Internet Governance Forum has been, in the past, often given the sobriquet of “a talk shop”. During the WSIS+10 Review, the APC performed an analysis of concrete decisions or actions that have been taken as a result of engagement at national, regional and global Internet Governance Forum. Since the WSIS+10 recommended that more “Concrete Outcomes” were needed from the IGF, a number of processes including the publication of formal messages from each IGF as well as the IGF High Level Panel were implemented. Today, many examples abound where the dialogue started at IGF and ended up with concrete outcomes including discussions that moved to specialised fora and agencies. Linking workshops and the IGF Processes to SDGs was also a significant step into making sure the IGF discussions led to advances in the world’s sustainable development.

This session looked at the specific case of Core Internet Values. From its first workshop in Sharm el Sheikh 2009 (Workshop on Fundamentals: Core Internet Values) until today, the DC-CIV has been refining the list of Core Internet Values and this, along with work undertaken by other organizations, has led to the widespread comprehension that there are indeed some Internet fundamentals which make the Internet what it is and what it will continue to be. But what and how can more be done?
