hey!

Sounds like an 8:30 call.  Here's a call in number: 605-475-4000.  Pswd: 223621#

Unfortunately, I can't get on tonight.  I'm sorry.  So, I'm going to email my thoughts here and look to check in via notes later.

1. Potluck - so we are scheduled for 1-4pm at the Commons on 10/21.  What are we doing to invite people?  Facebook, email.  Anything else?  (individual outreach). Can we figure out who is doing what?

2. Survey - can we assign the people we want to do individual outreach to?  I am happy to take a long list.  I think we should make assignments just so we are not double outreaching, etc.  I'm going to finish entering my notes before the call. I think we probably need to have a longer discussion about who we are talking to about joining the core team, etc.  Is that happening tonight?

3. Meeting/visioning - I do think we need to figure out soon how to all spend a full day together soon.  I think we need clearer sense among the team of what people want, steps we want to take, etc.  When can we have a 1-day session?  We've also all 8 of us never been in the same room together.  We need to do that.

4. The Commons - Melissa.  Lara, Sharon and I had a pretty good meeting with Melissa on Friday.  Mostly we told her that we aren't ready to jump in quickly and want to keep exploring things.  Said we would like to hold our potluck there, possibly programming on the theme of "movement spaces" and that we have CUNY students doing research for us.  She has a deadline of the end of this year, by which she wants to have people in place that can take over day-to-day management of the place.  I'm feeling like I would like (and I think that Lara and Sharon maybe feel this way too) to help Melissa figure out the sustainability of her space.  Helping her do the scheduling, figuring out the first floor, new logo design, etc.  I think it might be good practice and I want to see that space succeed and not get sold, or rented to high paying tenants because there isn't a sustainability plan.  I am probably getting laid off from my job tomorrow and am going to have a little extra time.  But, my sense from the last meeting was that people don't necessarily want to get in too deep with the Commons.  But I can't shake the feeling that we are missing an opportunity a bit if we don't work with Melissa a little more closely than potlucks.  What does everyone think?  I guess another alternative is that those of us that are interested in exploring the Commons more closely can do that and see where it goes, without necessarily being a commitment of MSP.

5. Beyond the Block - we did tabling there on Saturday and I also helped a lot with set up, etc.  We got some paper surveys filled out.  I think it was a great festival.  I think the concept of bringing together music and organizing, creating a space where multiple communities are sharing has a lot to do with what we are talking about with MSP.

that's what I have.
hope everyone is well.

Hey yall,

Looking forward to our discussion tonight at 8:30!

Does anyone want to facilitate or offer to take notes?  I can jump in as need be.

Sounds like agenda items are:

1) General quick check-in.... how folks feeling? (we can skip this if time is short)
2) Finalizing potluck details... and invitation plan
3) Leadership retreat... setting a date
4) Follow up with people from survey (including setting up 1on1s)
5) Core team bios on website
6) Collaboration with Melissa/the Commons
7) CUNY students priorities

Sound good?

Some additional thoughts to mull around...

Should we go ahead and create a doodle for dates for a 1-day leadership retreat?  I worry we'll un unable to find a weekend that works for all 8 of us, but worth a shot!  Could Oct 14th work, since we're already scheduled to meet that night for our monthly meeting?

In looking back at the survey, the most popular programming option not requiring substantial space was the idea of a resource library.  What if we started collecting resources (bullhorns, sound equipment, etc.) and housed it in the Commons for the time being (assuming there's a secure location or one could be created)?  That way we could have a concrete project in motion that already indicates our desire to be a resource to grassroots orgs and struggles citywide.  We could even have a kickstarter to raise some intro funds for that, which is much less daunting than coming up with rental/purchase money for a property?  A friend of mine who is a lead organizer at SEIU, who filled out the survey (his mom is Karen Smith who also is down) said we could probably gain access to the "basements full" of items that the union is no longer (or currently) using.

I'm also into the idea of doing programming around the idea of movement spaces at the Commons.  Bring folks together from Brecht, Bluestockings, The Point, that spot in Sunset Park, etc. and talking about best practices and what kind of inter-space collaboration is possible.  Again, that starts us out in an intentional way of being in solidarity with other locations (and not in "competition").

Anyway... I realize this is all last minute and folks might not get a chance to read before the call, but figured it was worth jotting down nonetheless.

xx
Lucas
