NAMES IN BOLD FOR FOLLOW-UP RESPONSIBILITIES.

Spend a lot of time checking in about all the space options/projects/possibilities in the air.

Here are the follow-up steps!

Nadia will check in with her contact on the Muste board to ask:
  • Are they committed to building a new additional floor?
  • Could it be feasible to consolidate existing tenants onto one floor and allow us to activate the top floor (tear down walls?)
Lara and Lucas will check in with Melissa from the BK Commons.  Lucas will draft email, CCing Lara and the two of us can offer to meet to see how she's doing with the building, explore if she wants to invest in another property (Muste?) and/or help her activate the Commons if there is a business partner out there ready to run a cafe/eatery/etc.

Lucas will check in with Easton and his crew

Lucas will follow-up with RJ/Foundry. Lara wants in on that convo if we meet with them.

Lucas will follow up with Bushwick crew (none of us went to the Indy party last night).

We decided we wanted to make a postcard in time for the Activista happy hour that is designed well and printed nicely that acts as a glorified business card for the project.  Nadia will draft text.

We also want to compile a more detailed booklet based on materials we already have and things we might want to add (like what?).  Lucas will draft that.

We will be sending out an e-mail blast on Tuesday.  Lara and Lucas to draft to include:
  • What we've been up to
  • The new docs we've created
  • Mention possible space partners and progress, but no names/particulars
  • Activista Happy hour
  • The meeting with Thanu and crew
  • Soliciting graphic design support
We talked about two folks possibly rejoining the Core:
Lara to reach out to Sharon
Lucas to reach out to Michelle (and send her text for the Activista happy hour)

Lucas to check in with Arnau (friend from Spain coming in a few weeks who is active in the social center networks) and with Brooke to see how her upstate retreat center is going.

Lucas to take people off Core email list who are not on core (DONE!)

Anything else?

onward!
xx

Hey everyone!

Below in RED are the "homework" items that I know have been completed since our last meeting.  Feel free to share your own updates!

Do we want to discuss our game plan for Thursday?  Is it just coming with copies of the existing docs we have?  Do we need any shared talking points since there is some sensitive matter about particular spaces in the mix?  Is it too far-fetched at this point to have a promo postcard ready by Thurs evening?

Oh, and I just posted on the MSP FB wall about the happy hour.

NAMES IN BOLD FOR FOLLOW-UP RESPONSIBILITIES.

Spend a lot of time checking in about all the space options/projects/possibilities in the air.

Here are the follow-up steps!

Nadia will check in with her contact on the Muste board to ask:

STILL NEED TO DO (rumor has it Melissa may have sold the building to WBAI) Lara and Lucas will check in with Melissa from the BK Commons.  Lucas will draft email, CCing Lara and the two of us can offer to meet to see how she's doing with the building, explore if she wants to invest in another property (Muste?) and/or help her activate the Commons if there is a business partner out there ready to run a cafe/eatery/etc.

DONE (the church is now trying to implement greater control and religious programming... maybe was too good to be true, but they will keep us updated) Lucas will check in with Easton and his crew

DONE (they will keep us in the loop.  They are also workshoping the idea of an artist/organizer advisory council.  Would either of you want to discuss that with them?) Lucas will follow-up with RJ/Foundry. Lara wants in on that convo if we meet with them.

I texted McNair, but haven't heard back.  I heard from Max that the landlords are also trying to raise the rent on the 1st floor, so it's kinda a mess there.  Ana has RSVPed on FB for Activista Happy House) Lucas will follow up with Bushwick crew (none of us went to the Indy party last night).

We decided we wanted to make a postcard in time for the Activista happy hour that is designed well and printed nicely that acts as a glorified business card for the project.  Nadia will draft text.

We talked about two folks possibly rejoining the Core:
DONE! Lara to reach out to Sharon
DONE! Lucas to reach out to Michelle (and send her text for the Activista happy hour)

DONE! (he send me these links (one and two) for articles (the 2nd links has lots translated into English) about social centers) Lucas to check in with Arnau (friend from Spain coming in a few weeks who is active in the social center networks) and with Brooke to see how her upstate retreat center is going.

Lucas to take people off Core email list who are not on core (DONE!)

Anything else?

Ah, I drafted text but never hit sent:

THE MOVEMENT SPACE PROJECT

aims to be the NYC area's largest, multiracial, multi-issue, multi-purpose social justice and cultural center for artists, activists, organizers, educators and grassroots leaders. It will serve as a dynamic hub for resourcing and bridging our movement(s) together through ongoing, engaging programming and nightlife activities.

Been playing phone tag with my contact on AJ Muste board. But tenants, board, and people part of the space/capital campaign working group have been are having regular meetings on Wednesdays at 4pm about the building, including visioning sessions that sound a lot like stuff we've been discussing at MSP.  It would be really great for someone (I can't with my work schedule) from MSP to try to attend those meetings.

Thanks for drafting the text, Nadia! Looks good, but I'm not sure it makes sense to scramble to get the postcards ready by Thursday since we don't have a designer lined up yet. Let's just bring printouts of the sample week of programming, ranking doc, general info sheet, etc.? As for shared talking points, I think we should agree not to share specific details that could be sensitive & just say we have a lot of balls in the air right now & we're waiting to see where things land. Does either of you have other ideas about what we should be saying?

I'd love to talk with Foundry about the artist/organizer advisory council. Lucas, would you please let RJ know I'm interested?

Also I can help with the booklet!

agreed it doesn't make sense to scramble at this point to get a new postscard printed by tomorrow.  i think that that length of text you drafted nadia could even make sense for a business card sized thing.  what else would you guys imagine putting on there that would give people a clear enough sense of who we are, what our approach is and how to contact us/get involved?

i went ahead and printed 50 copies of the sample week of programming, the ranking document and another 40 copies of the 3-pager summary i just added a link to at the bottom of our homepage.

also agreed it makes sense to not talk too much about locations, particularly the one easton is involved in.  i'm personally cool saying we've met with folks from the bushwick spot, the brecht, and others without getting into too much nitty gritty.  people are gonna wanna hear specifics, so it would be good to have some substantive updates to share with them.

i texted mcnair this morning since it's his birthday and i used that as an excuse to check in again.  he wrote back "yay! thanks. we will gab soon!"

any next steps we want to plug people into?

excited to hang with folks tomorrow night!

xx

i'm fine with saying we're in conversation with the bushwick folks & brecht as long as we make it clear that those are exploratory conversations, not firm commitments. should we mention the commons as well? i know it seems like melissa's probably selling the building, but it seemed like we were all interested in following up with her about investing in a new spot. also, since all the potential space partnerships we have so far are with predominantly white groups (something we should discuss...?), i think we should be mindful of emphasizing our ongoing commitment to POC/immigrant communities & relationships with POC organizers - we can discuss the nightlife meeting, conversations we've had about safer-space issues, programming ideas, helping the bushwick folks do neighborhood outreach, etc.

excited to hang out with y'all tomorrow, too - & thanks for making the copies, lucas!
