hey team,

FOR TOMORROW:
we have over 90 rsvps for tomorrow... and that doesn't count all the folks that vocal is turning out (they didn't link to the fb event in their blast, i don't think).  so it should be PACKED.

i have to host a candidates forum down the block starting at 6:30, so i hope to be at frank's at 6 to drop off materials and then come back around 7pm.  anyone else planning to be there on the early side to welcome folks?

i can print some of the basic msp materials at work and bring a sign-in sheet.  should we bring anything else?  any other coordination plans to discuss for tomorrow?

MEETING with MICHELLE + SHARON
sharon, michelle and i met on monday night to get caught up on all things MSP and to talk at more length about vision+values for the happy hour.

after going over the status of the various possible partner groups (brecht, bushwick, commons, etc.) we talked about the happy hour and about involvement in the msp.

HAPPY HOURS MOVING FORWARD
there's interest in re-building the list of die-hard host committee members for the happy hour and ensuring that it reaches into various pockets of the social justice word (labor, env, community, etc.).  we did not outline what that onboarding process would look like beyond starting with a brainstorm list of people and assessing them together.

the host committee (which would include the whole MSP core, presumably?) would then decide what orgs/groups want to partner with next (i've put out feelers with social justice leadership, fierce, caaav, and right to the city on my end).

there was also talk about IDing people who can serve as extra (formal or informal) host committee members for specific happy hours rooted in a particular neighborhood community.  for example, if we were to do a happy hour in washington heights at some point, we the "permanent" house committee could work to bring on a set of people people with pull in that community and add their names as hosts for that month's happy hour.

michelle and sharon were super keen on keeping the happy hours vey informal (ie: things like name tags are too much like "work").  we also observed that people meet new folks organically at these events, but it might also be nice to have us "hosts" make a point of introducing ourselves to people who look new, lost, shy, etc.

we didn't have consensus about opening up the question of the name of the happy hour (whether it should stay Activista or if we should brainstorm something else).  but we have greater clarity about the different dimensions of "ownership" and "branding" connected to the happy hours.

MSP LEADERSHIP
michelle was clear that she would like to bottom-line the happy hours and would not have capacity to join the core group (my question: michelle, do you want to stay on this list so you know what's being discussed in the "inner circle"?).

sharon is down to dig back in put it would be much more sustainable at something like a meeting every two weeks.  she prefers mondays to wednesdays.  (i am personally available most mondays, and can also do sundays).  what schedule should we stick to?

how does that all sound?  did i miss anything?

hey y'all, i can be there at 6 to meet-&-greet. discussion re: happy hours all sounds good to me, although i would like to return to the question of the name sometime soon - a friend who is latin@ recently expressed some discomfort/confusion & i didn't really feel like i had an explanation for her.

mondays work for me, & i'm willing to try meeting every other week instead of weekly - although in that case i think i'd want to try to activate the programming working group to meet during the off-weeks & start developing stand-alone events. let's put this on the agenda for next time - which i guess would be july 29?

Hey folks,

I'm still working and got a bunch more to do (heading on the road again, all week next week for work). Lots of shifts happening at work, FYI.

That said, I'm sorry to say that I won't be able to make it tonight. I've invited a bunch of people, some of whom said they're going. Know you all will be friendly and welcoming, and I'll send them notes that they should still go and hang out with all you fine folks.

Overall, feeling like it will be hard for me to be making meetings over next several weeks. I have a lot of work related travel over summer and early fall...and family stuff that will keep my non-working time pretty packed.

It's probably best that I take a hiatus from the core for the next several weeks. Hoping that by September or October life will feel a little less hectic.

Have a blast.

Nadia

Hey Nadia, thanks for the update - we'll miss you, but hopefully you can rejoin us in the fall... In the meantime, do you want to stay on the Core mailing list or should we take you off?

Everyone else, are we still on for July 29?

Yes! The 29th works well for me. Thanks for the reminder, Lara. I'm cool hosting, going to yours, or meeting at a spot in Manhattan.

Since the 3rd Thursday of August falls pretty early (the 15th), maybe we should work on securing next partner org by our meeting on Monday? Right to the City? CAAAV? Restaurant Opportunity Center? Radical Social Workers? Anyone else?

Ps: Cheyanna Webber (of Solidarity NYC) is working on a business plan to run a bar out of The Commons first floor. She wants to talk in more detail about it with us. We could have her come to a part of our mtg next Monday or we could set up something separate.

On a similar tip, I was thinking of sending McNair and Ana (from the Bushwick spot) a message thanking them for coming out to the happy hour at Frank's and reiterating our desire to explore collaboration with them. How does that sound?

I'm totally good to set up partnering. Usually I wait for folks to approach us. But I can reach out to the radical social workers group and ROC. I'm thinking about folks who I know and who have been to a happy hour and would feel comfortable getting their orgs to co-host.

Those all sound good to me. Did we come up with a process for deciding which groups to reach out to for the happy hour? Michelle, are you OK working on your own to set things up with the partner orgs or do you need support?

I'm fine meeting wherever. Sharon, any preference?

I'd be cool with inviting Cheyenna to join us on the 29th, & I think it's a good idea to follow up with McNair & Ana. Wondering I should do it since I had a long talk with Ana or whether it makes more sense to stick with just one point person. What do y'all think?
