I
am writing to tell you about a major community festival that I have
been involved with organizing in collaboration with
organizers/activists and community organizations in Brooklyn this
summer. The effort came out of many conversations including the ways in
which communities of color and immigrants are often not at the center
of mass organizing efforts and how to push different kinds of creative
local community-based initiatives. The fruits of this summer effort is
the Beyond the
Block Festival (more info on the festival + the flyer is
below) taking place on Saturday,
September 22nd from 1 - 8pm.
I am writing with an open call for two things: [Feel
free to forward to people you think may be interested]
1) If you are affiliated with a group or community organization and the mission of the festival appeals and is relevant to you, would you like to table or provide resources or a workshop at the event? If so - please fill in this form by clicking HERE. The deadline is Monday, September 17th.
2) Would you be willing to VOLUNTEER to help do outreach this weekend AND/OR to help be community security or program support during the festival itself on September 22nd? We are in serious need for volunteers. If you can, please fill out this form by clicking HERE. We need volunteers ASAP. There will also be a conference call for volunteers next Wednesday, Sept 19th (info in the volunteer link).
MORE
ON BEYOND THE BLOCK (if
you have any questions feel free to contact me at tha...@gmail.com)-
Beyond
The
Block
creates a space where music meets community. In its inaugural year,
Beyond the Block is taking place in Sunset Park and a months-long
intentional process of collaborating with groups who support Latino,
Arab, and Asian immigrant communities in Sunset Park and Bay Ridge led
to the selection of a musical
line-up and community resources tailored to needs of these multiple
communities. Click HERE for
the mission and vision.
Beyond The Block is a collaboration between Beyond Digital, Dutty Artz, The Arab American Association of New York, CAAAV-NY, La Union, La Casita Comunal de Sunset Park, and individual artists and Brooklyn-based community members. The outdoor event is free and open to the public. It will take place on the afternoon of Saturday September 22nd, from 1-8pm, at Rainbow Park in Brooklyn on 6th Ave. between 55th and 56th Streets. (Flyers and resources have also been translated to Arabic, Chinese, and Spanish)
