Anyone going to the Making Worlds event that starts tonight?  I might stop by...

Notes from the MSP mtg March 27th with Lara and Lucas

We went through and agreed upon a framework for ranking the activities that can happen in the space.  Please see my attached draft and provide feedback ASAP.  Let me know the number of dollar signs, thumbs ups, fists or dynamite sticks you think we should alter... or notes to add!

We also agreed that we wanted to explore hosting/organizing a programming event within the next couple months.  Here's the ideas we came up with:
  • Co-hosting a happy hour with the Activista group (they host monthly get-togethers, Lucas friends with organizers)
  • Check in with Thanu about co-hosting dance party with another crew (iBomba and "X")
  • Film screening & discussion maybe with someone working on social justice/movement space work
  • Dinner with Arnau Monty about social movements and social centers (visiting NYC in May, works here)
  • Building solidarity across differences panel/discussion on class, race, etc.
  • Intergenerational encounters focusing on a particular movement: queer, police violence, labor, racial justice, space (ex: Charas, Young Lords and East Harlem)
  • Looking at movement training centers like the historic Highlander Center and give space for Brooke Lehman to talk about her project upstate that can support NYC groups and struggles
  • Later in summer: picnic or barbecue get-together
We want to build many of these events into our week of ideal programming. We would then share these programming ideas with MSP list and have folks write back with their top picks (and what they would be willing to help organizing with us).  We would do targeted follow-up to key people we want to pull into this to get their feedback/buy-in.

Check in with Jodi and Nadia about this... and target date for when we pull off one (or more) of these events... MAY?

Goal: by next week have draft of dream programming week finished.  Please add your feedback/events to the Google Doc link above that Lara created.

Confirm meeting time in Bushwick next week. UPDATE.. we're meeting by the Jefferson Stop on the L train next Thursday at 6:30pm.  Mark your calendars!  We will meet with Mcnair Scott's crew and then leave ourselves a little time to debrief and work on other MSP next steps afterwards.  This April 4th meeting will be in place of our regularly scheduled Wednesday meeting.

QUESTIONS for Mcnair about his project in Bushwick:
  • What are their intentions about the vibe they wanna create at the bar space (music, aesthetics, etc.)?
  • Who is their target audience and how are the planning to bring them in?
  • How much programming are they looking for?  Particular kinds of programming they would like to see?
  • If we were to do programming, what would be our financial responsibility to the larger space?  (does the "event space" need to generate a certain amount of income?)
  • How will decisions be made (business and otherwise) between Mcnair, Andy and Ana... and the other collaborators (us?) working in the space?
  • If they are hiring people from the neighborhood, will those same people have decision-making role in what happens in the space (as opposed to just bartending, working the kitchen, etc.)?
  • What balance do they envision between people being attracted to a space for "fun" social purposes as opposed to more "serious" political discussions/events?
  • What is there sense of social spaces that already exist in the neighborhood and how to organically connect to those... what would they relationship to those be (if any)?

Can't make it to Making Worlds tonight, but I'll try to be there for at least part of the day tomorrow.

Left Forum may be good a good place to host a panel on building solidarity across difference... Here is an email they sent a friend:

--

The tradition of the Left Forum, and the panels that make it up, often finds droves of panel proposals coming in just before the deadline. This year presents us with a significant challenge for coping with that tradition: in contrast to past years, the conference date has changed and the panel deadline is extended late in the conference organizing period (the deadline is April 13).

While there are many exciting panels in the works, and among other things that will boost attendance, Noam Chomsky will be speaking at this year's conference, we must get your panel proposals in soon, in order not to be overwhelmed.

If as we hope, you are planning to submit a panel this year, please start the process right away by submitting either your initial panel proposal or full panel information. You can do this by clicking the following link: submit a panel. Or you can do this by going to the Left Forum home page at www.leftforum.org

If you would like us to work with you in any way, whether providing digital resources for outreach, referrals to speakers or brainstorming on panel topics, please feel free to call or email us.

We look forward to working with you and seeing you that the Forum, and please note that there is less than two weeks left before the panel submission deadline.
