Hey have ya'll heard about these folks?  They are friends of friends who are doing (very) similar work to MSP.

Brooklyn Base (the name of their group), is something that i think would be worth talking about either over the listserve and/or at the next meeting.

stay hydrated

Hi Everyone!

We've been working crazy behind the scenes so thought it would be good to let you guys know how things are moving!

If you haven't seen it yet, we've got this facebook page up for the space: http://www.facebook.com/brooklyn.base
And also made a twitter account: https://twitter.com/TheBaseBK

The kickstarter project got accepted and we're planning to launch it at a launch party this Friday, which Willie's excellent band Vulture Shit is going to play :)!!!
This is a preview of that kickstarter project:http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/thebase/1889571444/edit
WARNING: It's extremely family friendly!!! But don't worry! It's intentional to get folks of that persuasion involved in donating!
It goes live on Friday and will be up for a month. We'll go crazy promoting it :)

As part of that we're looking to set up a talk with folks who have been involved in previous struggles. We're thinking of folks like Frank Morales, Ben Morea, Silvia Federici, and/or Laura Whitehorn.

We've got our eyes on a nice, big storefront on Broadway near the Myrtle/Broadway stop. Here's some photos of it attached...

We've also been talking with loads of folks about different projects to have in the space and it looks like its going to be great!

We're just making a flier for this Friday and will pass it along as soon as we finish :)

Elysa and Khalil

I recognize a bunch of names on the list, & I know Danna, although not very well. Based on that admittedly limited information, my impression is that the vibe of this project will be more anarchist infoshop than movement space, i.e., not very similar to what we've been discussing. Still, it would be good to learn more.

So Elysa and her partner (who are heading the project) came into Bstox yesterday and we had an opportunity to talk. Although the space seems as if it is going to try to embody a more DIY ethos than what MSP is attempting to do. They have found a space, in a similar location to where MSP is looking, and are attempting (through kickstarter, fundraisers, etc) to raise enough money to pay for rent for a year in order to open up the space to the community. They were talking about creating a 'base' for activists, but also heavily emphasized that they want to create a space where non 'anarchist' or 'activist' identified folks would feel comfortable and attracted.

They were both talking about creating a space where people could offer skill shares and teach classes (everything for free - once the rent is paid) potentially have a limited day-care center, etc. etc.

I apologize that I have not been more present for the MSP meetings, and maybe folks have expanded on the ethos of the project, but how is this (Brooklyn Base) significantly different from the goals of MSP?

yeah i've heard some rumblings about this space too. i'm not sure if i know any of the folks involved, though some of the names sound familiar. from what i've heard and from what sky mentioned the values and intentions seem right inline, or at least on the same wave length.

like any space/org/group/endeavor the vibe and realization will be dictated by the energy of the personalities involved. (regardless of intention. just the way it is).

there is also another space like this i've heard mentioned by some other people too. (at least i think its different then this one). that is looking for a space.

at the end of the day no one is gonna do what we do. whatever it is.

and even if biko, lorde, goldman, malcolm, black elk and the pantheon of movement gods shine down us with the blessing of achieving the end all and be all of space that we envision, that appeals to all kinds of people we hope to attract, for all kinds of radical future making we dream of, it will still only be wrapped in the infinite limit of what our dynamic and personalities can create and shape.

in my opinion more the merrier.  the more space's there is, is one kind of indication of the resurgence of a healthy movement ecosystem.

let's find a space!

much love and light
